A Michigan county, where former President Trump won, on Tuesday voted to ask the state for a hand recount of 2020 presidential election ballots, citing “concerns” and “questions” about the accuracy of the results.
The story: The Cheboygan County Board of Commissioners voted 4-3 to send a letter to the state elections director Jonathan Brater to request a hand recount of its ballots in the 2020 presidential race, among other things, the Associated Press reported.
“As commissioners, we have heard from many of our constituents expressing concerns/questions” regarding the election that took place last year, the letter, signed by Chairman John Wallace, reads. “We believe we have a responsibility to address these concerns/questions.”
Worth noting: Trump won 64% majority of the vote in the county. President Joe Biden won the state by 2.8 percentage points.
In detail: The letter lists three points of concern, the first one of which is “[w]hether the actual vote tally for the presidential election within Cheboygan County was accurately reported by the county’s Dominion vote tabulator and Election System and Software machine.”
The answer this question, the letter says the best course of action would be to compare the tally of the proposed hand recount to the votes that were reported after Nov. 3.
Next, the county wants to determine if “the actual vote tally for the presidential election within Cheboygan County was accurately reported to the state election officials,” and to examine if the voting equipment in the county had been “in communication with any unauthorized computer and whether there is any evidence that any unauthorized computer actually manipulated the actual presidential election vote tally within Cheboygan County.”
The examination of the voting machines would include determining if the Dominion Voting Systems and Election System and Software had modems installed and whether they could have been connected to the Internet.
Meanwhile, Rep. Steve Carra (R) put forward legislation that proposes conducting an audit of the 2020 election results. If approved, the bill would allow for the establishment of a bipartisan board that will be tasked with hiring an outside group to conduct the review, Detroit News reported. The audit would reportedly cover 10% of the precincts in every 83 counties in Michigan and 20% of the precincts in Detroit.
