The Defense Department has confirmed that a service member was found dead in a parking lot at the Pentagon.
According to Fox News, Pentagon press secretary Brig. Gen. Pat Ryder reported that officers “responded to a call for a welfare check [for an] unidentified individual.”
Ryder’s statement noted that “at approximately 3:30 p.m. EDT [Tuesday], the Pentagon Operations Center received a call requesting a welfare check on a military service member.”
According to the statement, Pentagon police officers responded to the call and searched the main complex’s north parking area. There they discovered the deceased service member in his vehicle.
The death was confirmed by Arlington County Emergency Medical Services personnel.
Unconfirmed reports noted the deceased was A DOD Public Affairs Director for the Air Force & Space Force.
No additional details on the incident are available. Ryder noted the matter is under investigation.
