A Florida man is facing attempted first-degree murder charges after authorities say he stabbed his 74-year-old grandmother multiple times on Mother’s Day following an argument over helping bring groceries into the home.
West Palm Beach police said officers were dispatched to a residence on 52nd Street shortly after 1:20 p.m. Sunday after a relative called to report that 29-year-old Keo Lavar Nottage Jr. had attacked his grandmother during a domestic dispute.
When officers arrived, they encountered Nottage and his teenage cousin engaged in a physical struggle outside the home as they worked to secure the scene.
Investigators said the incident began earlier in the day when Nottage’s grandmother and his 16-year-old cousin returned from shopping for a Mother’s Day dinner and asked him to help carry groceries inside.
Police said an argument escalated quickly, during which Nottage allegedly became increasingly agitated and told his cousin, “Someone is going to die today,” according to The Blaze.
Authorities said Nottage then went into the kitchen, retrieved a knife, and attacked his grandmother shortly afterward.
Emergency responders later determined she suffered 11 stab wounds and required immediate surgery at St. Mary’s Medical Center in West Palm Beach. Hospital officials reported she remained in critical condition following the procedure, CBS 12 reported.
Witnesses told investigators that the teenage cousin attempted to intervene during the attack before fleeing the residence to call 911.
Detectives said surveillance video from cameras positioned around the home captured key portions of the incident, including the teenager running outside and yelling that his grandmother had been stabbed while the suspect allegedly followed him with the weapon still in hand, according to FOX 29.
Police said the situation did not end with the initial assault. After the stabbing, the cousin reportedly confronted Nottage again as he attempted to leave the property.
A second physical struggle broke out between the two, during which investigators said the teen suffered a hand injury while trying to restrain him until officers arrived on the scene.
Officers ultimately detained Nottage at the scene before transporting him for medical treatment related to injuries he sustained during the confrontation.
Court records show Nottage has been charged with attempted first-degree murder with a deadly weapon and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon without intent to kill.
Authorities confirmed he was later booked into the Palm Beach County Jail and is being held pending further court proceedings, WSB-TV reported.
During a brief initial court appearance Monday, Nottage appeared before a judge, confirmed his identity, and asked questions about the charges filed against him.
WPBF reported that deputies removed him from the courtroom after several interruptions during the proceeding.
Investigators also noted prior law enforcement responses involving Nottage at the same residence.
According to the outlet, records from a 2021 incident indicated family members had previously raised concerns about mental health struggles and referenced past Baker Act evaluations connected to the suspect.
Officials said the investigation remains active as detectives continue reviewing physical evidence, surveillance footage, and witness accounts. Additional procedural steps in the case are expected as prosecutors move forward with the charges.
