Honduras Minister of Foreign Affairs Eduardo Enrique Reina identified the deceased minor as 17-year-old Ángel Eduardo Maradiaga Espinoza. Reina demanded that the U.S. conduct an investigation and “if there is any responsibility, apply the full weight of the law.”

There was no cause of death given and no details about whether the individual was sick or receiving medical treatment.

The Biden administration released a statement confirming the news after reporters started pressing the administration for answers.

“The US Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) is deeply saddened by this tragic loss and our heart goes out to the family, with whom we are in touch,” the statement said.

“As is standard practice for any situation involving the death of an unaccompanied child or a serious health outcome, HHS’ Office of Refugee Resettlement (ORR) Division of Health for Unaccompanied Children (DHUC) is reviewing all clinical details of this case, including all inpatient health care records.”

The statement said that a medical examiner was conducting an investigation into Espinoza’s death and that the administration would not share any further details because it was a case involving a minor.
