Republican Utah Senator Mitt Romney delivered a pointed message to President Biden, urging him to consider retirement at the end of his term.
This challenge emerged shortly after Romney himself declared he would not be pursuing a second term in the Senate, attributing his decision to his advancing age.
“President Biden, when he was running, said he was a transitional figure to the next generation. Well, time to transition,” Romney said when questioned about whether his choice to retire due to age should also be relevant to Biden, who is 80, and former President Donald Trump, aged 77.
Romney’s remarks harken back to Biden’s self-description as a “transition candidate” during his 2020 presidential campaign. Biden had implied he would act as a bridge, facilitating the rise of a fresh wave of Democratic leaders. Romney further elaborated on this sentiment, asserting, “I think it would be a great thing if both President Biden and former President Trump were to stand aside and let their respective party pick someone in the next generation … I think both parties would be far better served if they were going to be represented by people other than those of us from the baby boom generation.”
The topic of Biden’s age, especially in the context of a potential re-election, has become a focal point of discussion, even among members of his own party. A recent poll conducted by the Associated Press-NORC revealed that a staggering 69% of Democrats believe Biden might be too old to run for office again.
Romney’s sentiments regarding the age of presidential contenders also encompassed Trump. This perspective aligns with that of Trump’s primary Republican competitor, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis. DeSantis, in a CBS interview, expressed that Trump’s age could indeed be “a legitimate concern” for the electorate as 2024 approaches.
The Biden campaign remained silent, offering no immediate response to these comments. Meanwhile, former President Trump continues his political engagements, as evidenced by his recent appearance at the Monument Leaders Rally in South Dakota earlier this month.
