Boston Red Sox outfielder Jarren Duran has been suspended for two games after using a anti-gay slur during Sunday’s game against the Houston Astros at Fenway Park.
The incident, which occurred in the sixth inning, has sent shockwaves through the baseball community and beyond.
Duran, 27, who has been enjoying a breakout season, reportedly turned to a heckler during his at-bat and said, “Shut up, you f*cking f*ggot.”
ESPN reported that the use of this offensive term has resulted in swift action from Major League Baseball (MLB), with the suspension taking effect immediately on Monday.
This disciplinary measure aligns with previous actions taken by the league.
In 2017, outfielder Matt Joyce faced similar consequences for using the same word towards a fan.
Duran issued an apology statement on Sunday. “I used a truly horrific word when responding to a fan,” he said.
“I feel awful knowing how many people I offended and disappointed. I apologize to the entire Red Sox organization, but more importantly to the entire LGBTQ community.”
The rising star acknowledged his responsibility as a role model for young fans and expressed his commitment to personal growth.
“I will use this opportunity to educate myself and my teammates and to grow as a person,” Duran added.
The Boston Red Sox organization was quick to respond to the incident.
In a statement, the team echoed Duran’s apology, particularly to the LGBTQ community.
“We strive to be an organization that welcomes all fans to Fenway Park, and we will continue to educate our employees, players, coaches and staff on the importance of inclusivity,” the statement read.
As part of the disciplinary action, Duran’s salary for the duration of his suspension will be donated to PFLAG, a prominent LGBTQ organization.
This move demonstrates the team’s commitment to making amends and supporting the apparently affected community. However, some fans have taken issue with it.
“Using Jarren Duran’s salary from the two game suspension to donate to an organization that supports and funds bodily mutilation on minors is absolutely disgusting,” one X user said.
Other Red Socks fans blasted the story altogether, with some even stating Duran will now gain more fanfare thanks to the MLB organization’s overreaction.
One user posted, “Jarren Duran is a bad*ss. People are soft as f*ck.”
“The sh*t that garbage *ss fans call him is probably a million times worse. Don’t give me that held to a higher standard bullsh*t.”
The timing of this incident is particularly unfortunate for both Duran and the Red Sox.
ESPN outlined that Duran has been a key player in the team’s push for a playoff spot, with impressive stats including a .291 batting average, .350 on-base percentage and .503 slugging percentage.
His 14 home runs and 29 stolen bases have made him a valuable asset to the team.
Moreover, Duran’s recent performance at the All-Star Game, where he was named MVP after hitting a go-ahead home run in the fifth inning, had further cemented his status as one of the league’s top hitters.
The Red Sox, currently three games behind Kansas City for the American League’s wildcard spot, will feel the impact of Duran’s absence during this crucial period of the season.
