The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says that Listeria can cause serious infections in young children, elderly people, pregnant women and adults with weakened immune systems. Infections of Listeria that occur during pregnancy can lead to miscarriage, stillbirth, early delivery or a life threatening infection for the newborn.

Infections usually develop in the bloodstream and can affect other parts of the body, including bones, joints and parts of the abdomen and chest. Symptoms can include headache, stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance, convulsions, fever and muscle aches and often begin 1-4 weeks after eating contaminated food.
