Freddy “Boom Boom” Cannon, the rock and roll singer whose energetic hits helped define the late 1950s and early 1960s, has died. He was 89.
Cannon died Friday after a brief battle with cancer while receiving hospice care in California, according to family members. His death was announced by longtime friend and iHeartRadio producer Tom Cuddy.
According to Deadline, Cannon spent his final days surrounded by family, including his children, Conny Weber and Billy Cannon.
Born Frederick Anthony Picariello Jr. on Dec. 4, 1936, in Lynn, Massachusetts, Cannon emerged as one of the leading rock and roll performers during the years between Elvis Presley’s rise to fame and the arrival of the Beatles.
He became known for high-energy hits such as “Tallahassee Lassie” and “Palisades Park,” songs that established him as a regular presence on radio and television during the early years of rock music.
Cannon frequently appeared on Dick Clark’s American Bandstand, where his lively performances made him a favorite with audiences.
Remembering Cannon, Cuddy said the singer was known for his energetic stage presence and upbeat performances.
“I had never seen a performer who kept his performance so upbeat and fun,” Cuddy said, recalling that Clark often selected Cannon to open oldies concerts because he could quickly energize a crowd.
Cannon’s influence extended beyond his own recordings.
Rolling Stones frontman Mick Jagger has credited Cannon’s 1959 hit “Tallahassee Lassie” as an inspiration for the band’s 1971 song “Brown Sugar.” Author Stephen King also referenced Cannon in several of his novels.
Cannon’s breakthrough came after relocating to Philadelphia at Clark’s recommendation.
Clark encouraged revisions to “Tallahassee Lassie,” which went on to reach No. 6 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1959 and No. 13 on the magazine’s R&B chart.
Throughout his career, Cannon remained active as a performer and continued appearing at concerts celebrating the early years of rock and roll.
In 2011, he published his autobiography, Where the Action Is, reflecting on his decades in the music industry, per the Daily Mail.
Cannon was married to his high school sweetheart, Jeanette. The couple had three children: Conny, Billy and John.
His wife died in 2024, and his son John died in April 2026.
He is survived by his children Conny Weber and Billy Cannon, his sister Mary Lou, five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
In a statement released on behalf of the family, Weber thanked fans for their support throughout Cannon’s life and career.
“We would like to thank everyone for their love and support throughout our dad’s life,” Weber said. “He will be remembered as a rock and roll icon. His music will live forever in our hearts.”
Cannon’s recordings helped bridge the early era of rock and roll, and his energetic performances on stage and television made him one of the genre’s recognizable entertainers during its formative years.
