National Association for the Advancement of Colored People Chairman Leon Russell is a hypocrite, Florida GOP Chairman Christian Ziegler charged Sunday.
Ziegler challenged Russell to leave Florida after a NAACP “travel advisory” warned black Americans to avoid Florida.
“The travel advisory comes in direct response to Governor Ron DeSantis’ aggressive attempts to erase Black history and to restrict diversity, equity, and inclusion programs in Florida schools,” the NAACP board of directors said in a press release.
“Florida is openly hostile toward African Americans, people of color and LGBTQ+ individuals,” the statement continued.”
Ziegler pointed out that Russell lives in Tampa, Fla., according to his Twitter bio.

The NAACP Board of Directors issued a statement on Saturday warning black Americans that the state of Florida was not a safe place for them and included an official “travel advisory” calling the state “openly hostile” – but the board’s chairman, Leon Russell, apparently lives in Florida himself.
The statement, released on Saturday, accused Governor Ron DeSantis of making “aggressive attempts to erase black history and to restrict diversity, equity, and inclusion programs in Florida schools.”
The travel advisory goes on to warn black Americans that “Florida is openly hostile toward African Americans, people of color, and LGBTQ+ individuals. Before traveling to Florida, please understand that the state of Florida devalues and marginalizes the contributions of, and the challenges faced by African Americans and other communities of color.”
But Florida GOP Chairman Christian Ziegler quickly noticed that Russell, chairman of the NAACP’s Board of Directors, lived in Florida — and he offered a quick response.
“The CHAIRMAN of the @NAACP lives in Tampa, FLORIDA!” he tweeted. “True leadership is being willing to do what you ask others to do … time to step up and MOVE. If you think our state is so bad, the @FloridaGOP will help with moving costs.”
Florida has been the target of a number of attacks from the left in recent weeks – largely due to actions Governor DeSantis has taken to prevent doctors and parents from allowing minors to begin the medical process of gender transition and to prevent schools from teaching radical gender theory to elementary school students.
DeSantis is also expected to announce a bid for the 2024 Republican presidential nomination in the coming days, joining a field that already includes former President Donald Trump, former South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley, former Arkansas Governor Asa Hutchinson, Senator Tim Scott of South Carolina, and Vivek Ramaswamy.
