Rep. Nancy Pelosi recently disclosed her primary motivation for seeking office: fundraising for herself and fellow Democrats. She conveyed this during an interview with Politico.
“My focus is the House and presidency; you’re in a stronger position as a candidate,” Pelosi told Politico. “You may not know this, but if you’re not a candidate, you really can’t raise money for yourself. And raising money for myself enables me to spend that on other people.” Pelosi said.
Pelosi’s commitment to her party’s financial strength is evident. She emphasized the importance of her veteran status in Congress as a significant advantage for fundraising. Her dedication to the Democratic cause is further highlighted by her recent declaration of candidacy for California’s 11th Congressional District, representing San Francisco. This marks her potential 20th term in the House of Representatives.
“For the House Democrats, though, I needed to be able to still raise significant money for them as a candidate,” Pelosi added.
Pelosi’s enthusiasm for the upcoming 2024 election cycle is palpable. She expressed her eagerness to potentially reclaim the House and even challenge former President Donald Trump, although she refrained from mentioning him directly.
“I feel so excited about the prospect of engaging people in this, I don’t want to use the word ‘fight,’ but this decision for our country,” Pelosi remarked. “I feel I have a leverage, an influence, it’s not power — you know, I had power as speaker — it’s influence and that I shouldn’t underutilize it.”
Pelosi’s husband fully backs her decision to run again. She candidly shared that she wouldn’t have pursued this path if he had any reservations.
“I wouldn’t be doing it if he were objecting,” Pelosi stated. “He’s apolitical, but he knows what is at stake.”
Pelosi’s recent announcement quashes any rumors of her retirement. However, it does raise concerns about the advanced age of several elected officials, including Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, Sen. Dianne Feinstein and President Joe Biden.
