The impromptu performance unfolded hours after Indiana defeated the Dallas Wings 98-87 on Friday night, giving Cunningham a fresh reason to celebrate as her 30th birthday arrived that Sunday.
Footage from inside the bar captured Cunningham standing shoulder to shoulder with a male companion atop the counter while dozens of patrons below sang along in scenes onlookers called chaotic.
The lighthearted moment landed squarely in the middle of a turbulent stretch for Cunningham, who has spent recent weeks at the center of one of the WNBA‘s most heated public disputes.
That dispute traces back to comments Cunningham made opposing the participation of transgender athletes in women’s sports, remarks that quickly spread well beyond basketball circles.
The fallout followed Cunningham across a recent Fever road trip through Indiana, where her comments triggered dueling demonstrations of protest and support outside multiple arenas.
Pressed on the backlash by ESPN, Cunningham disputed how her position had been portrayed, saying, “I got a lot of negative feedback about me hating trans. And I’m like, ‘I never once said that.'”
She went on to frame her remarks differently, telling the outlet, “I think that I am here to extend love. But I also think with that love is truth, being honest.”
Cunningham then explained the reasoning behind her stance, stating, “And I want to protect young girls in a locker room, or young girls in sport who shouldn’t have to go against biological men.”
Rather than soften her position in the days that followed, Cunningham doubled down, telling reporters, “I said what I said, I think it’s common sense. I think I’ll always believe in that, it’s really important to protect children.”
She added a further point of clarification, saying, “And that’s little girls, who are also involved in that category. I stand by what I said, and I’ll always believe that.”
A separate flashpoint emerged during the final leg of that same road trip, when Chicago Sky guard DiJonai Carrington was ejected from the game for a hard foul committed against Cunningham.
The ejection unleashed a wave of criticism aimed at Carrington across social media, with many users targeting her directly over the play.
Carrington, who is Black, responded to that backlash by posting the words “white privilege” on X, a message that quickly drew its own round of scrutiny.
In a follow-up post, Carrington denied that the comment had been written specifically in response to the foul call, though she offered no further context for what had prompted it.
With both controversies still simmering, the WNBA issued a statement calling for an end to the “vitriol” being directed at players throughout the season.
That statement arrived alongside the league’s formal position on transgender athlete eligibility, a policy question that had taken on new urgency amid the surrounding uproar.
League general managers and team presidents convened Wednesday as part of an anti-hate task force specifically assembled to examine eligibility standards in light of the ongoing transgender sports debate.
After reviewing the matter, league officials determined that the WNBA’s existing eligibility criteria required no adjustments.
The decision effectively closed the door on any near-term rule changes, even as public debate over the issue continued unabated outside league offices.
In its formal announcement following the meeting, the WNBA stated there were “no immediate eligibility matters affecting” the league at this time.
