On Monday, RTM reported that Woonsocket, Rhode Island, police discovered two decomposed bodies in the home of former Mayor Susan Menard.
On Wednesday, WJAR News reported that the medical examiner’s office identified one of the bodies as Susan Menard, the city’s former mayor.
Woonsocket Police Chief Thomas Oates reported a neighbor called officials after “smelling something foul” and realizing he hadn’t seen anyone in the home for several weeks.
According to WPRI-TV, police entered through a window and found the body of a woman in one room and a male in a different room.
Authorities have not released the identity of the second body found in the home.
NBC News reported Oates saying: “There’s no outward signs of any foul play or any type of a struggle. We’re aware that both of these individuals, if they’re who we think they are, had medical issues that were pretty significant.”
The medical examiner’s office noted, “The causes of death for these individuals are still pending.”
Menard served with distinction as the mayor of Woonsocket — a town of 40,000 located approximately 20 miles from Providence — from 1995 until 2009.
Menard was the city’s first female mayor and the longest-serving mayor in the city’s history.
In 2017, city officials named Woonsocket Middle School in her honor.
