Bryan C. Kohberger, 28, was arrested in Chestnuthill Township, Monroe County, Pennsylvania, by Pennsylvania state troopers and FBI agents.
A SWAT team entered the suspect’s residence during his arrest in Pennsylvania’s Pocono Mountains, according to an ABC News report.
The troopers arrested Kohberger based on an arrest warrant issued by Moscow, Idaho, police and the Latah County Prosecutor. Boise, Idaho, News6 reporter Karen Lehr posted to Twitter the Affidavit of Probable Cause of a criminal complaint filed in Monroe County court.
The suspect is being detained in the Monroe County Correctional Facility while he awaits extradition to Idaho to face first degree murder charges.
Kohberger is a Ph.D. criminology student at Washington State University, according to a Fox News report. The campus where he was working on his dissertation is about 10 miles across the state line from the University of Idaho campus.
A Reddit account using the name Bryan Kohberger asked Redditters seven months ago to participate in a research project. The study was one “that seeks to understand how emotions and psychological traits influence decision-making when committing a crime.”
“In a Reddit post published 7 months ago asked for participation in a study attached with Kohberger’s name that asked questions about how a crime was committed, how victims were targeted, and how someone would leave a crime scene,” posted News 6 reporter Jake Garcia.
The Reddit post asked for study participants to research how emotions and psychological traits influence decision-making when committing a crime.
The student investigator for the study, Bryan Kohberger, listed an email associated with DeSales University in Pennsylvania.
Police narrowed their search to Kohberger after a December 7 appeal for help identifying a white 2011-2013 Hyundai Elantra spotted on surveillance footage near the murder scene. So many tips poured in that Moscow, Idaho, police turned them over to FBI agents for follow-up, according to an Associated Press report.
Investigators reviewed more than 22,000 registered cars that matched search criteria, according to police.
The suspect registered as a Libertarian in Albrightsville, Pa., in 2013, according to a Fox report, which added Kohberger does not appear to have a criminal record.
The report noted the suspect has two sisters, including one that works as a marriage and family therapist in New Jersey.
Kohberger graduated from DeSales University in Allentown, Pa., with a bachelor’s degree in 2020 and Master of Arts in criminal justice in 2022, according to the report.
