California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) said Monday that he and his wife are under investigation by the Trump administration’s Department of Justice (DOJ), alleging that federal authorities have expanded scrutiny into his personal and political circle as part of what he described as a politically motivated effort.
Newsom made the claim in a video posted to social media, saying investigators have reached out to associates, requested records, and reviewed years of documents as part of an inquiry he argues lacks a clear legal foundation.
He said the effort has extended beyond professional contacts and now includes members of his family, including his wife, Jennifer Siebel Newsom.
“Just in the last week, I’ve learned his campaign has reached my own home: to get me, he’s coming after my wife, Jen,” Newsom said, according to The Post Millennial.
He described Siebel Newsom as a “public servant” and said she had done “nothing wrong,” characterizing the alleged inquiry as an attempt to exert political pressure through association.
In the same remarks, Newsom accused the DOJ of “abusing the grand jury process,” saying federal investigators have been “digging through years and years of random documents” and contacting individuals linked to him, including former staff members and personal associates.
He did not provide documentation or specific details regarding any potential case or the scope of the alleged investigation.
Newsom suggested the scrutiny is connected to his national political profile and frequent criticism of President Donald Trump.
He said he believes he is being targeted because he is “considering running for president” and has repeatedly challenged Trump publicly on policy and conduct.
“Donald Trump picked the wrong target,” Newsom said in the video. He added that he and his wife have “nothing to hide” and said any examination of records would ultimately fail to produce wrongdoing.
He further framed the alleged investigation as part of a broader pattern of federal law enforcement actions involving political figures he views as adversaries of the Trump administration, citing other public officials who have faced scrutiny, including New York Attorney General Letitia James, former FBI Director James Comey, and former Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell.
“Donald Trump is simply the most corrupt president in American history,” Newsom said, arguing that the DOJ under Trump has been used to pursue political opponents.
He said federal investigators have “not found a crime” and are “simply trying to find one,” describing the effort as politically motivated rather than evidence-driven, according to CNBC.
Newsom also directly addressed the president in the video, saying, “To Donald Trump, who I know is watching, I have a message for you,” before warning that attempts to investigate or pressure his family would not deter him politically.
He said any lawful inquiry would be met with cooperation but rejected what he described as personal targeting.
It remains unclear what specific matter, if any, is being examined involving Newsom or his wife.
The governor did not identify charges, subpoenas, or formal allegations in his remarks, and no court filings or official statements have confirmed the existence of a case matching his description.
The White House and DOJ have not publicly confirmed any investigation involving Newsom or Siebel Newsom.
As of Monday, no charges have been filed, and no public records indicate a formal proceeding tied to the claims described in the video.
Newsom said he would continue to speak out while cooperating with any lawful process, framing the dispute as part of a broader political conflict heading into the 2026 election cycle.
