FEC Demands Answers From Gavin Newsom PAC Over Travel Spending, Warns of Possible Audit

California Gov. Gavin Newsom’s (D) political operation is facing new federal scrutiny after the Federal Election Commission demanded additional information concerning tens of thousands of dollars in travel reimbursements reported by his Campaign for Democracy PAC.

The FEC warned that the committee could face an audit or enforcement action if it fails to adequately explain the expenditures, according to a letter sent to the PAC last week.

The inquiry centers on payments listed as “Travel and Event Reimbursement” in the committee’s federal disclosures.

Federal election officials said disclosure requirements can require committees to identify the underlying businesses or vendors that ultimately received money when staff members or other individuals are reimbursed for expenses.

The commission gave the PAC until Oct. 6 to provide “missing or clarifying information” or explain why further itemization was not required.

“Failure to adequately respond” could result in an audit, the FEC warned, while noncompliance with federal campaign-finance law could potentially trigger enforcement action.

The letter does not accuse Newsom or Campaign for Democracy PAC of violating federal law.

Newsom communications director Isaac “Izzy” Gardon characterized the matter as routine.

“This is a routine disclosure request for additional information,” Gardon said. “The PAC is fully compliant and will respond.”

Federal Election Commission guidance states that when an individual pays campaign-related expenses from personal funds and is later reimbursed by a political committee, specific reporting requirements can apply. The agency separately maintains rules governing travel expenditures and reimbursements by nonconnected PACs.

Campaign for Democracy PAC reported more than $73,000 in payments labeled “Travel and Event Reimbursement” between April and June, according to a review cited by The California Post.

Approximately $56,453 of that amount was reportedly paid directly to seven individuals.

Those payments included more than $12,600 to Bradley Alexander, $12,474 to Elise Aliotti and slightly more than $12,000 to Brianna Jahangiri.

Gardon received another $9,334.62 in reimbursements, while filings listed approximately $16,552 paid to three firms — SGR Consulting, Bertolina & Barnato and Click Strategies.

The FEC letter was addressed to Analea Patterson, a former senior counselor and cabinet secretary in Newsom’s office who became treasurer of Campaign for Democracy PAC in April.

Federal records independently identify Campaign for Democracy PAC as an active nonconnected political action committee and list its committee identification number as C00836320. FEC records show the PAC had approximately $7.11 million in cash on hand as of June 30, per the New York Post.

The commission’s records show the committee reported about $3.38 million in total disbursements from Jan. 1, 2025, through June 30, 2026.

The inquiry arrives as Newsom increases his political activity outside California.

The governor recently traveled through the South, including appearances in Alabama and South Carolina, where his operation said the goal was helping Democratic candidates ahead of the November midterm elections. Newsom also acknowledged during the trip that he is considering a presidential run in 2028.

Newsom’s broader Campaign for Democracy network has accumulated roughly $14 million across affiliated entities, according to the source, with money being spent on staffing, polling, advertising, travel and other political activity.

One of Newsom’s longtime political advisers, Lindsey Cobia, reportedly received approximately $334,000 from the PAC in 2025, including a salary-and-bonus payment exceeding $213,000 in December.

The federal inquiry does not establish wrongdoing and remains, at this stage, a request for additional disclosure information.

Campaign for Democracy PAC now has until Oct. 6 to respond and provide the additional details sought by federal election officials.
