High-ranking government officials are actively exploring the potential elimination of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), signaling a potential major overhaul of disaster response mechanisms in the United States.
Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem announced during a recent Cabinet meeting her intention to “eliminate FEMA,” marking a significant moment in the agency’s history.
Noem’s declaration comes amid growing criticism of the agency’s structure and effectiveness.
The potential dismantling of FEMA has gained traction from multiple political corners. Rep. Byron Donalds (R-FL) characterized the agency as “overly bureaucratic” and “overly politicized,” while Rep. Jared Moskowitz (D-FL)has proposed transforming FEMA into an independent Cabinet-level agency.
Moskowitz specifically criticized FEMA’s current placement within the Department of Homeland Security, arguing that the agency is hindered by bureaucratic complexity, according to a report from Government Executive.
“DHS has become too big and too slow to oversee what needs to be a quick and flexible emergency response,” he stated.
President Donald Trump and his allies have consistently suggested that states should exercise more direct control over disaster relief efforts, challenging the federal government’s current centralized approach.
The Western Journal reported that Noem has been vocal in her support of this perspective, telling CNN that she wants to “get rid of FEMA the way it exists today.”
Recent controversies have further fueled criticism of the agency. Resist the Mainstream previously reported that Elon Musk, leading the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), revealed that FEMA authorized a $59 million payment for “luxury hotels in New York City to house illegal migrants” – a move that directly contradicts previous executive orders aimed at controlling illegal immigration.
The firing of FEMA’s Chief Financial Officer, two program analysts and a grant specialist follows a tweet by Musk in which he revealed FEMA’s shocking spending on illegal aliens.
The Tesla CEO criticized the decision, arguing that funds meant for American disaster relief were being misused to support illegal immigration instead.
Additional allegations suggest potential political bias within the agency. The Journal highlighted that reports indicate that during the aftermath of Hurricane Helene and Hurricane Milton, some FEMA employees were allegedly directed to avoid assisting homeowners who displayed Trump campaign signs or flags on their properties.
The proposed legislative effort by Moskowitz and Donalds aims to restructure FEMA, reflecting a bipartisan recognition that the current disaster response system requires significant reform.
Their proposed bill would transform FEMA into an independent agency with direct Cabinet-level accountability.
Noem emphasized that any potential changes would be carefully implemented. “He’ll work with Congress, though, to make sure that it’s done correctly and that we’re still there to help folks who have a terrible disaster or crisis in their life,” she explained during her appearance on CNN, referencing potential collaborative efforts with the Trump administration.
