A writer for the digital extension of MSNBC’s “The ReidOut Blog” referred to New York City’s mayor using perjorative terms to discuss illegal immigration’s impact on the Big Apple.
Ja’han Jones criticized NYC Mayor Eric Adams for his handling of the influx of illegal aliens to the sanctuary city. Jones seemed exceptionally incensed by the mayor’s declaration that the crisis could destroy his city.
“There’s a reason Adams’ rant is being applauded by conservatives,” remarked Jones. “Maybe it’s because [conservatives] feel they’ve made him… come around to their bigoted thinking.”
Jones accused Adams of “parroting right-wing talking points and espousing conservative politics” on immigration.
“That has led some of his critics to label him ‘Black Trump,'” Jones jeered. “And he lived up to the moniker Thursday with an anti-immigrant diatribe that sounded as if it had been ripped from the former president’s social media feed.”
Gotham’s mayor noted the city has received more than 100,000 illegal aliens this year, some of whom were bussed to NYC by Gov. Greg Abbott (R-TX). Others are drawn to the sanctuary city’s promise of housing.
“We’re getting 10,000 migrants a month,” the mayor bemoaned, warning the crisis could “destroy New York City.”
Adams also predicted the situation could exacerbate the city’s deficit, leading to cuts in “every service.” Adams emphasized, “It’s going to come to your neighborhoods.”
The mayor issued a Saturday order requiring all city agencies reduce spending by 15% to compensate for costs of dealing with its surge of illegals, according to a New York Times report.
While addressing the issue, Adams noted Abbott’s initiative of transporting migrants from the border to sanctuary jurisdictions.
However, he also acknowledged the federal government has been relocating migrants from the border to other parts of the U.S.
Abbott has been a proponent of Operation Lone Star, which he believes addresses the “dangerous gaps created by the Biden administration’s refusal to secure the border.”
The Texas Republican stated that this initiative aims to alleviate the pressure on border communities that are grappling with a surge in border crossings.
As of Tuesday, Texas has transported over 35,000 migrants to sanctuary cities, with more than 13,300 of them being sent to New York City since August 2022, according to Abbott.
“What happened?” asked Adams. “It started with a madman down in Texas, decided he wanted to bus people up to New York City. One hundred ten thousand migrants.”
“We have to feed, clothe, house, educate the children, wash their laundry sheets, give them everything they need, health care,” Adams continued. “And this team here, we stated, let’s do everything possible before we have to push it out into neighborhoods and communities. Month after month, I stood up, and I said, ‘This is going to come to a neighborhood near you.’”
