Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) expressed outrage during House debate regarding a resolution to remove Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) from her position on the House Foreign Affairs Committee.
McCarthy noted the disciplinary move was necessary because of Omar’s multiple “antisemitic and anti-American remarks,” according to Fox News.
On Thursday, the House approved the resolution to remove Omar from the Foreign Affairs Committee by a vote of 218-211, which fell along party lines.
McCarthy warned he was planning to take action to remove Omar from the important committee because of negative public statements about America and Israel. McCarthy offered multiple examples, including, “Israel has hypnotized the world; may Allah awaken the people and help them see the evil doings of Israel.”
Democrats took issue with the move — many calling Republicans racist and guilty of religious bias.
Many have condemned claims of racism or religious bias, arguing that Omar was removed for cause:
Ocasio-Cortez’s response was particularly angry. She accused Republicans of hypocrisy and “targeting women of color.”
Ocasio-Cortez also accused Republicans of “targeting and racism against Muslim Americans.”
Without substantiating her claims, Ocasio-Cortez said: “I think one of the things we should talk about here is also one of the disgusting legacies after 9/11 – has been the targeting and racism against Muslim Americans throughout the United States of America.”
She added, “And this is an extension of that legacy!”
