Opening Ceremony for Dead Prez’s Library was Pure ‘Murica

President Donald Trump journeyed deep into North Dakota’s rugged Badlands on Wednesday, stepping inside the brand-new Theodore Roosevelt Presidential Library for the first time as America gears up to celebrate its 250th birthday.

The president landed aboard his newly delivered Air Force One, a Boeing 747 handed over to the United States by Qatar, touching down in Medora ahead of a full tour of the 96,000-square-foot facility built to honor the nation’s 26th commander in chief.

Standing before a crowd at a Western-style amphitheater following his walkthrough, Trump repeatedly circled back to Roosevelt’s grit, framing the late president as a model of American resolve.

“He had a freakin’ wild life,” Trump told the audience. “He didn’t want to be quiet. He wanted to be great.”

Trump doubled down on his admiration later in the speech, calling Roosevelt a singular figure in American history. “He was something special,” Trump said. “He was a really great man. He was a man the likes of which you may never see again.”

The timing of the visit was no accident. The library’s official public debut lands this Saturday, folding directly into the nationwide festivities marking 250 years since the Declaration of Independence was signed.

While touring the grounds, Trump revealed his administration would funnel $750,000 from the National Endowment for the Humanities into the library’s first year of operations.

The $450 million project stands roughly where Roosevelt himself once sought refuge from personal catastrophe.

After his mother and his young wife died in the same New York house within hours of each other in February 1884, a shattered Roosevelt fled west to the Dakota Territory.

There, he spent much of the period between 1884 and 1887 ranching cattle, hunting big game, and rubbing shoulders with cowboys who mocked his spectacles. Roosevelt later maintained that his North Dakota years were the reason he ever reached the White House at all, where he ultimately served from 1901 to 1909.

Wednesday’s trip also gave a national spotlight to Interior Secretary Doug Burgum, the former North Dakota governor who first pitched the library concept to state lawmakers back in 2019, selling it as a tourism engine for the region.

North Dakota’s legislature responded by approving a $50 million endowment, on the condition organizers raise an additional $100 million in private funds — a target hit in 2020. Total giving has since swelled to nearly $354 million as of early this year, with major gifts flowing in from oil magnate Harold Hamm, members of Walmart’s Walton family, Citadel hedge fund founder Kenneth Griffin, and Burgum himself.

According to Executive Director Robbie Lauf, Trump holds the distinction of being the library’s very first official guest.

Organizers extended invitations to every living former president for the grand opening, placing the North Dakota museum in the company of over a dozen other presidential libraries scattered across the country, from Reagan’s in California to FDR’s in New York and Hoover’s in Iowa.

Inside, visitors will encounter artifacts kept out of public sight for decades — Roosevelt’s Rough Riders uniform from the Spanish-American War, a diary entry capturing his raw grief from 1884, and the eyeglasses case, prepared remarks, and bloodied shirt tied to the 1912 attempt on his life.

Lauf said he expects the library to draw school groups, families, and travelers already passing through en route to Yellowstone or the Black Hills, despite — or because of — its remote location.

“It’s a feature, not a bug, that we are in a county of 1,000 people and a town of 120,” Lauf said. “TR came here for that purpose.”

At one point during the visit, Trump interacted with an AI-generated version of Roosevelt, asking whether the Panama Canal ranked as his crowning achievement. The digital Roosevelt cited pride in the canal alongside accomplishments in conservation, medicine, and his Square Deal reforms.

Roosevelt’s affinity for the presidency has echoed through Trump’s own second term, during which he has repeatedly invoked the canal’s construction and suggested the U.S. could reassert control over it.

Just beyond the library, Theodore Roosevelt National Park offers hiking trails and a scenic loop through Badlands terrain roamed by bison and wild horses.

Trump’s North Dakota stop precedes another patriotic milestone: a planned Friday appearance at Mount Rushmore in South Dakota for Independence Day fireworks, mirroring a similar trip he made in 2020.
