Rep. and former Democratic National Committee chair Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D-FL) has sparked significant controversy following her assertion that Tulsi Gabbard, who has been nominated by President-elect Trump for the position of Director of National Intelligence (DNI), is a “likely Russian asset.” This statement was made during an appearance on MSNBC, yet Wasserman Schultz did not provide any substantial evidence to back her claim, resulting in widespread criticism from various commentators and political figures alike.
Wasserman Schultz’s comments were framed as a reaction to Gabbard’s appointment and her capability to handle sensitive U.S. intelligence matters. Critics quickly pointed out that such accusations, especially coming from Wasserman Schultz, raise questions about her credibility. Many referenced her controversial history during her tenure at the Democratic National Committee (DNC), particularly concerning her management of sensitive information connected to a former IT aide implicated in a financial scandal.
Glenn Greenwald, a prominent journalist, highlighted Gabbard’s departure from the DNC in 2016, suggesting that Wasserman Schultz’s past actions undermined her current claims. This irony was also noted as many critics recalled previous allegations against Wasserman Schultz regarding the DNC’s alleged manipulation during Hillary Clinton’s campaign, particularly suggesting a bias against Bernie Sanders.
“Tulsi Gabbard resigned as DNC Vice Chair in 2016 because Debbie Wasserman Schultz was rigging the election to ensure Hillary won — as Liz Warren, Donna Brazile and WL all showed,” Greenwald wrote, per Fox News.
Moreover, Wasserman Schultz condemned Gabbard for meeting Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, who has been widely criticized for allegedly using chemical weapons against civilians during her presidential campaign in 2020. Gabbard’s military background, coupled with her service in Congress from 2013 to 2021 and her current status as a Lieutenant Colonel in the Army Reserves, contrasts sharply with the critical portrayals she faces from some in the political arena.
Trump’s endorsement of Gabbard for the DNI position underlines his view of her extensive experience and commitment to national security issues. As this situation continues to develop, it underscores the divisions within the Democratic Party regarding Gabbard’s political alignments and past statements.
If confirmed as DNI, Gabbard would work alongside the current DNI, Avril Haines, providing guidance on national security matters.
