Last fall, an unnamed female student was allegedly “severely beaten” by a 17-year-old biological male transgender student. The incident occurred in a girls’ restroom at Edmond Memorial High School.
The mother of the 15-year-old female student is suing the school for $75,000 for instituting policies that she claims led to the assault on her daughter.
The Edmond, Oklahoma, suit claims that due to school policies, “student V” unnecessarily experienced “severe physical and mental injuries, severe physical and mental pain and suffering, and severe emotional distress.”
According to the lawsuit, the incident occurred on Oct. 26, 2022.
The mother of student V claims the transgender attacker had “made previous threats of violence” and that at least once, police responded to reported threats and calls “by another student” to search the 17-year-old for weapons.
Though school administrators were aware of the instability of “student A,” they took no measures to protect students.
In the lawsuit, the distraught mother commended a new measure Oklahoma Gov. Kevin Stitt signed into law requiring Oklahoma public school students to “use restrooms that match to the sex listed on their birth certificates.”
According to Fox News, the assault report, filed soon after the alleged incident, claims the attacker, known as “student A,” entered the restroom and spoke to the younger female student. A fight broke out following an argument.
Fox News reported that the victim “told police she was speaking with friends in the girls’ bathroom when student ‘A’ approached her with a question.”
The female student reported she told the transgender student she did not want to engage in a conversation and why, at which point student A became angry and repeatedly hit the victim in the face.
The report alleges the transgender student repeatedly “hit, kicked, and pulled student V’s hair.”
Student V reported to police that the power of student A’s punch left her unable to fight back. Student V’s friends reportedly attempted to intervene but were also struck in the face with multiple blows.
The police report notes that one victim had “injuries to her eye, face, and head with a possible concussion.”
Angela Grunewald, superintendent for Edmond Public Schools, addressed the issue via a video posted to YouTube in December 2022. “You may ask yourself how can that happen?” Grunewald began.
“It’s hard to explain, but if a parent comes in and enrolls their child as a certain gender, and when you look at that child by all social norms they look and present themselves as that gender, it’s not something that you would question,” she added.
School officials report that the attacker is no longer a student at Edmond Memorial High School and that all schools in the district enforce the new bathroom-use-based-on-biological-sex law.
An investigation is ongoing.
