FBI Director Kash Patel is facing mounting scrutiny over a series of trips, security arrangements and personal travel decisions that critics say blurred the line between official government business and luxury leisure activities.
The latest controversy involves Patel’s use of FBI and Justice Department aircraft for trips involving his girlfriend, country music singer Alexis Wilkins, as well as reports of a private snorkeling excursion near the USS Arizona Memorial at Pearl Harbor.
According to reports cited by NDTV, Patel and Wilkins traveled aboard the FBI’s Gulfstream V jet from Washington to Philadelphia last May to attend a country music concert at Lincoln Financial Field. The pair reportedly watched the performance from a private luxury suite estimated to cost between $35,000 and $50,000.
FBI spokesman Ben Williamson said Wilkins had been invited by the performers themselves, though Patel reportedly declined to answer questions regarding who paid for the suite.
The report also detailed another trip in which Patel flew aboard a Justice Department aircraft from Virginia to Pennsylvania for one of Wilkins’ concerts before the plane later continued to Nashville, where Wilkins lives. The flights reportedly generated overtime costs for flight crews and security personnel.
Federal policy requires FBI directors to use government aircraft for security reasons, though officials are generally required to reimburse taxpayers for any personal portions of travel at commercial flight rates.
Patel has previously defended his use of government planes by arguing Congress mandated such transportation for security purposes.
The FBI director is also drawing criticism over a snorkeling excursion near the USS Arizona Memorial during a visit to Hawaii last summer.
According to the report, Patel and nine others used boats operated by Navy SEAL personnel for what was described as a “VIP snorkel” near the memorial site at Pearl Harbor, where more than 900 sailors and Marines remain entombed following the Japanese attack on December 7, 1941.
Visitors are generally prohibited from swimming near the memorial out of respect for the dead, and reports noted that former FBI directors dating back decades had not participated in similar activities there.
The controversy intensified further because Patel reportedly swam near the USS Arizona wreck itself for approximately 30 minutes.
Additional questions have emerged regarding Wilkins’ involvement in certain official events and meetings.
According to the report, Wilkins attended a closed-door FBI meeting in Pennsylvania involving discussions about fentanyl trafficking and testimony from families affected by the drug crisis. She reportedly sat at the head of the table alongside Patel and senior FBI officials.
Wilkins later stated she attended because of her advocacy work involving fentanyl victims and “angel families.”
Reports have also focused on the security arrangements surrounding Wilkins herself.
According to the article, Wilkins currently receives a full-time FBI security detail despite spouses and partners of previous FBI directors not typically receiving that level of protection. Patel has defended the arrangement by citing what he described as ongoing serious threats against her.
The security operation reportedly includes multiple agents and SUVs assigned to Nashville, costing taxpayers roughly $1 million annually before overtime and additional expenses are factored in.
Patel has already faced several controversies during his tenure, including criticism over appearances at sporting events and allegations involving excessive travel and public visibility.
The FBI director has consistently rejected accusations that he improperly used government resources, insisting all travel and security decisions complied with federal rules and security requirements.
