Police Chief Dismisses ‘Trans-Identifying’ Question as ‘Not Important at All’ in School Shooter Case

The investigation into the deadly shooting at Abundant Life Christian School in Madison on Monday continues, but the focus of the investigation has become a point of contention. Natalie Rupnow, identified as the shooter in the incident, opened fire at the school, killing one student and one teacher while injuring six others before taking her own life. The tragic event has sparked widespread debate, particularly regarding whether Rupnow, who went by the name Samantha, was trans-identifying.

Madison Police Chief Shon Barnes, who is leading the investigation, addressed this issue during a press conference on Monday, stating that whether Rupnow was trans-identifying was “not important at all” to the investigation.

“I don’t know whether Natalie was transgender or not,” Barnes said, according to the Daily Mail. “And quite frankly, I don’t think that’s important at all. I wish people would leave their own personal biases— we have lost members of our community.”

“It’s something that may come out later but for what we’re doing today it is of no consequence at this time.”

“’I don’t think whatever happened today has anything to do with how she or he or they may want to identify,” Barnes continued. “For what we’re doing right now, today, literally eight hours after a mass shooting in a school in Madison, it is of no consequence at this time [what gender the shooter was].”

Barnes’ comments sparked outrage on social media. Critics argued that understanding how Rupnow identified herself could be important for uncovering a possible motive.

“Are you KIDDING ME?!?” one X user wrote. “Actually, it’s very important. We have a mental health crisis and a prescription drug crisis in this country. Why is it important when the killer is a white male to talk about ‘white rage,’ but not important to investigate the issues of mental health and mental disorders? It is quite obvious at this point that there is a real problem going on in the country.”

Another commented, “It most certainly is ‘important’. Whoever, or whatever wrapped this child’s thinking, is responsible for the twisted mind that shot others. The fact is, such is evidence.”

“FU and your pronouns! You make this investigation look stupid with your wokeness! Stop beating around the bush, name and gender the shooter! Just the true facts!” wrote another user.

Barnes, however, has reiterated that the focus of the investigation should remain on the immediate facts of the case, and he emphasized that the identities of the victims have not yet been released.

“For what we’re doing right now, today, literally eight hours after a mass shooting in a school in Madison, it is of no consequence at this time [what gender the shooter was],” he concluded.

While the investigation continues, police have yet to confirm a motive for the shooting. They have not disclosed whether the victims were intentionally singled out or if the shooting was random. Additionally, authorities confirmed that Rupnow’s family, including her father, is cooperating with the investigation.

The conversation about whether Rupnow was trans-identifying stems from the rarity of female school shooters. According to data from the nonpartisan Violence Prevention Project, of the 200 shooters involved in 195 mass shootings between 1966 and 2024, only five were female.
