Officers report an active shooter situation in a small town northeast of Pittsburgh.
Exactly what has happened is unclear, but reportedly, more than 100 shots have been fired. Police are on the scene.
KDKA-TV reported that police were called on to serve an eviction notice when gunfire erupted in the 4800 block of Broad Street in Garfield, located northeast of Pittsburg.
Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported one observer saying, “I’ve never heard bullets like this. … [It’s like] something you’d see in a movie.”
Law enforcement has closed roads in the area and posted notices on social media urging residents to avoid the area as shots are “continuing to be fired.”
The police notice read: “Officers are beginning to evacuate people from the houses in the 4800 block of Broad St. If you are inside, please shelter in place, dial 911, and identify your address, and location. Officers will be entering to help guide you to safety.”
Fox News reported that Pittsburgh Public Safety Director Wendell Hissrich reported on the response time of his officers and how quickly the danger was contained.
“Our officers did an outstanding job. They were under gunfire,” Hissrich said.
“Fortunately, there were no injuries to any first responders,” Hissrich added
Many consider Hissrich’s statement amazing considering the multitude of bullets reportedly discharged.
InsiderPaper reported that Pennsylvania State Trooper Rocco Gagliardi told the press: “We have a lot of different agencies all working together right now and we want to resolve this in the best way possible,”
Sadly, Pittsburg was the site of a mass shooting event in 2018. Wendell Hissrich’s report at the time is noted below.
Local police and the FBI have established a staging area near the crime scene and will conduct a briefing soon.
