Roblox Faces Backlash for Banning Vigilantes Protecting Children on Platform

Roblox has ignited controversy by banning users who attempted to expose alleged predators on its platform, drawing sharp criticism from parents, gamers and child safety advocates alike.

Critics argue the company appeared to penalize those trying to protect children rather than addressing the predators themselves, raising questions about how the platform handles dangerous content.

The company defended its decision, noting that the vigilantes’ actions violated Roblox’s Terms of Use.

“While seemingly well-intentioned, the vigilantes we’ve banned have taken actions that are both unacceptable and create an unsafe environment for users,” Roblox said.

The platform emphasized that impersonating minors or attempting to lure other users to external sites for explicit conversations is strictly prohibited.

Roblox also encouraged users to report abuse through official channels, which provide critical details for timely and accurate intervention.

Predator activity remains a significant challenge on Roblox.

The company reported submitting over 24,000 reports to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC) in 2024, part of its broader effort to manage more than a billion annual reports covering spam, cheating and policy violations.

Despite these efforts, experts warn that predators continue to exploit the platform’s scale—over 111 million daily active users and billions of chat messages annually—to target vulnerable children.

Parents and advocacy groups have repeatedly expressed concern that minors are left exposed in the absence of stronger safety measures.

The ban sparked swift backlash online, with numerous users vowing to abandon the platform.

The outrage has escalated to the point that an active petition demanding the removal of Roblox CEO David Baszucki has emerged, garnering nearly 55,000 signatures as of Thursday afternoon.

Roblox has a substantial portion of its users under the age of 13, highlighting the platform’s massive influence over young audiences.

The recent ban has amplified concerns among parents and child safety advocates, who are calling for stronger protections and more transparent moderation policies to prevent exposure to predators and harmful content.

Concerns about platform safety have intensified with reports of disturbing activity in the user-created game Forsaken.

Resist the Mainstream previously reported that the game has been linked to cult-like behavior and attempts to encourage minors to engage in self-harm.

Experts warn that such trends illustrate the dangers posed by unmoderated user-generated content, particularly on platforms with large, global audiences.

These incidents also raise questions about whether Roblox’s current moderation system can effectively monitor such widespread, decentralized content.

The controversy follows a Hindenburg Research report that contributed to a drop of over 10 percent in Roblox’s stock, The Post Millennial reports.

The report labeled the platform an “X-rated pedophile hellscape” and criticized reduced spending on trust-and-safety measures while inflating user metrics.

It also referenced a 2018 case in which a man groomed 150 minors through Roblox, underscoring the persistent challenge of protecting children from online predators.

Despite the criticism, Roblox reaffirmed its commitment to user safety.

“We prioritize trust and safety because it’s core to what we do as a company,” the platform said.

Roblox continues to encourage reporting through official channels and stresses that maintaining a safe environment is central to its mission of responsibly connecting players worldwide.
