Prince Harry gave his side to the infamous fallout between Meghan Markle and Kate Middleton, which reportedly had the former actress “sobbing on the floor.”
In his new memoir “Spare,” Harry claims Middleton started a passive-aggressive argument through text message just four days before his 2018 wedding to Markle.
Princess Charlotte, the daughter of Middleton and husband Prince William, was set to serve as a bridesmaid at the royal wedding. Harry claims that Middleton messaged Markle, complaining that her daughter’s dress didn’t fit correctly.
“Charlotte’s dress is too big, too long, too baggy. She cried when she tried it on a home,” the Princess of Wales allegedly wrote.
Harry explains in the book that the dresses were “French couture” and had been hand-sewn to specific measurements without a fitting, saying that it “wasn’t a big shock” to find that the frock didn’t fit perfectly.
Markle was, at the time, involved in drama with her father Thomas who had been caught setting up staged paparazzi photos ahead of the wedding. She subsequently took a day to respond to Middleton’s complaint, Harry said.
“Meg didn’t reply to Kate straight away,” the prince wrote. “Yes, she had endless wedding-related texts, but mostly she was dealing with the chaos surrounding her father. So the next morning she texted Kate that our tailor was standing by.”
“I told you the tailor has been standing by since 8am,” a response from Markle reportedly read. “Here. At KP [Kensington Palace]. Can you take Charlotte to have it altered, as the other mums are doing?”
This response “wasn’t sufficient” for Middleton, who instead insisted that all the dresses “needed to be remade.”
Harry continues, “Meg asked if Kate was aware of what was going on right now. With her father. Kate said she was well aware, but the dresses. And the wedding is in four days!”
Middleton reportedly had other “problems with the way Meg was planning her wedding. Something about a party for the page boys? It went back and forth.”
Middleton eventually agreed to take Charlotte to Markle’s tailor, writing, “Fine.” The fight, however, was allegedly too much for Markle to bear, as Harry would later come home to find her “sobbing on the floor.”
He told her that “Kate hadn’t meant any harm” during the back-and-forth, noting that the Princess of Wales arrived at the home the following morning with flowers and a card, to apologize.
The drama picked up when the incident leaked to the media and became the stuff of the tabloids section. Reports claimed that Markle had made Middleton cry over the dress-fitting rather than the other way around, which made Harry incredibly upset because it was allegedly inaccurate. Harry became even further incensed after the royal family refused to issue a public statement refuting the reports.
In their famous 2021 interview with Oprah Winfrey, Markle stated that she was actually the one who had cried over the fight, complaining that staffers had refused to correct the record.
Speaking of Middleton, Markle stated: “I would hope that she would have wanted that corrected, and maybe in the same way that the palace wouldn’t let anybody else negate it, they wouldn’t let her, because she’s a good person.”
However, Middleton has not spoken publicly about the bridesmaid dress drama, taking the “never complain, never explain” mantra. It’s unclear whether she, too, was reduced to tears following the fight.
