Cenk Uygur has grand ambitions — his desire is to become president of the United States.
On Wednesday, Uygur, the progressive-minded founder of The Young Turks, announced his bid to run for president in 2024.
Interestingly, having no political experience and being relatively unknown to most Americans are not the biggest hurdles standing in the way of his dream — the biggest hurdle is that he was not born in America.
The Daily Wire reported that Uygur responded to a reporter’s question regarding the constitutional mandate that those serving as president must be born in America, saying he does not believe the Constitution’s “natural born citizen” clause will disqualify him in a campaign for the Democratic Party’s 2024 nomination.
Article II, Section 1, Clause 5 of the Constitution reads: “No Person except a natural born Citizen, or a Citizen of the United States, at the time of the Adoption of this Constitution, shall be eligible to the Office of President.”
Uygur, an immigrant from Turkey, did not specify why the constitutional requirement regarding citizenship would not apply to him.
Nevertheless, when speaking with Semafor, Uygur said he would win his case if the issue was brought to the U.S. Supreme Court.
The far-left commentator desires to pave the way for other immigrants to America to serve in the nation’s highest office. During the interview with Semafor, Uygur said, “I’m tired of 25 million Americans having this albatross around their neck.”
In 2020, Uygur ran an unsuccessful campaign for a seat in the U.S. House, though the citizenship requirements are different for holding that office.
President Joe Biden is down in the polls. Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s withdrawal was a bit of good news, but just day’s later Uygur made his announcement, and Cornel West has threatened to run as an Independent Both would have a negative impact on Biden’s campaign.
Hoping to take advantage of Biden’s vulnerability, Uygur posted on X: “Yes, I’m running against Joe Biden for the Democratic nomination. Joe Biden is down 24 points on the economy. He has no ability to make up that kind of ground on the most important issue. We need a new candidate now!”
