On Sunday, Randi Weingarten, the president of the American Federation of Teachers, posted an article about the rise of homeschooling in America and got more than she asked for when people began to respond.
Weingarten posted an article from Axios, entitled “What’s behind the increase in homeschooling,” on X, in which experts attributed the rise to kids needing specialized services and the pandemic.
However, many users began to push back on Weingarten, blaming the policies that she and the AFT have pushed on schools and school children.
Weingarten was quick to disable direct replies to her post, which doesn’t disable quotes of her messages, something pointed out by Townhall columnist Phil Hollaway.
“The answer is in your mirror @rweingarten,” he posted, “Also, why turn off replies? Are you afraid of the answers you’ll get? You and the teacher unions with help from [former CDC director Rochelle Walensky] sent public schools into a death spiral from which they may never recover,”
Pastor Jesse Johnson of the Immanuel Bible Church made a similar point, writing, “This tweet is ironic at like six levels. But here is another: A person touted as the country’s top teacher asks a question then turns off replies to keep people from answering it. That sums up pedagogy in public schools right now.”
“I’ve identified the suspect. Although according to them suspects should be able to identify themselves,” posted Colin Wright, an evolutionary biologist, alongside an image of a gender ideology instruction used in public schools around the country.
“The policies you’ve advocated, Covid-related and otherwise. Just like you’re behind much of the increased support for school choice and educational freedom. Congratulations!” posted Manhattan Institute constitutional expert Ilya Shapiro.
Weingarten’s post received pushback from several right-leaning organizations as well.
“Homeschooling is now the fastest-growing form of education in the U.S. Randi still doesn’t realize she is one of the greatest homeschool advocates in American history,” Young Americans for Liberty posted.
“Parents learned during covid that they often can’t trust schools to teach children effectively or respect their fundamental parental rights. You closed schools & left many parents with no other options. Now they know they can handle homeschooling. We should be thanking you,” posted Moms for Liberty.
