Former President Donald Trump continues to move forward in the polls despite facing four indictments and 91 felony charges. One of Trump’s biggest supporters is billionaire and former ambassador to the United Kingdom (2017-2021), Woody Johnson.
Though previous big donors, such as Blackstone CEO Steve Schwarzman, steel magnate Andy Sabin, and real estate titan Stephen Ross have declined to financially support Trump’s 2024 bid, Woody Johnson is calling for big donors to “get on the Trump train.”
TrendingPolitics reported that Johnson is speaking to wealthy potential donors, “relaying how serious the 45th president’s bid is and how much donors stand to lose if they sit on the sidelines next year.”
One person reportedly contacted by Johnson told CNBC: “The sales pitch from team Johnson has been ‘it’s going to be Trump based on the polling. Are you just not going to get on the train as Trump heads to be the nominee?’”
CNBC reported that Johnson is one of the “rare people in Trump’s inner circle” of mega supporters who have stayed with the former president.
The NFL Jets team owner appears ready and willing to lead in enlisting the financial support of megadonors and as the primary season ramps up, coordinating fundraising events for Trump.
President Trump has called Johnson a great friend and businessman, praising him publicly when speaking to a crowd at a campaign stop in New Hampshire last May.
“A friend of mine who is a great businessman and a great person, Mr. Woody Johnson, and his wife Suzanne Johnson,” said Trump as he took the stage to speak at the event.
According to Federal Election Commission records, Johnson was one of seven donors who gave $1 million in support of Trump’s campaign this year.
Johnson is an heir to the Johnson & Johnson fortune; his estimated net worth exceeds $3 billion.
The latest Quinnipiac poll noted Trump winning 62% of support in the GOP primary. His closest rival, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis was projected to win just 12% of the vote.
Though multiple polls showed Trump losing to President Biden in a repeat of the 2020 head-to-head match-up, recent polling shows that Trump has pulled ahead and now holds a lead of 3-5 points over Biden.
