A coalition of Canadian church leaders hammered Prime Minister Justin Trudeau in an open letter earlier this week over his treatment of the Freedom Convoy protesters and handling of COVID-19.
Liberty Coalition Canada (LCC), an activist Christian group covering the “the breakdown of liberty in Canada” put out an open letter to Trudeau urging the prime minister to drop COVID-19 vaccine mandates and “restore the constitutional freedoms of the people.”
“Too much ground has been conceded to this immoral agenda. All our institutions are fallen to it. Our schools, our lawfirms and courts, universities, even many churches. A regime and agenda based on lies is being coercive in order to maintain its power,” LCC President Rev. Michael Thiessen, one of the leading signatories on the letter, told The Daily Wire in a statement.
“We feel it is the Christian and moral responsibility of men of God to speak as socio-spiritual commentators (in a word — prophets) to our leaders and society regarding the secular authoritarianism taking hold of our nation,” he said.
The letter defends the Freedom Convoy that has demonstrated in Ottawa outside of Parliament in recent weeks over COVID-19 restrictions and vaccine mandates. The faith leaders wrote:
In recent weeks, the hugely popular truckers convoy containing many Christians (including pastors), has captured the imagination not only of this nation but other nations around the world, laying bare that what we have expressed and argued for months is indeed representative of the concerns of millions of ordinary Canadians who value peace, personal responsibility and liberty.
The Ottawa protest has presented your government with a wonderful opportunity to meet with and speak to ordinary Canadians lawfully and peaceably requiring the restoration of their constitutional rights. However, in response to their singing, praying, dancing, candy floss, bouncy castles, speeches about the constitution and outpourings of patriotic love for the country, your government has not only refused to meet with these citizens to hear their concerns, you have insulted, denigrated and lied about them, further dividing a hurting and broken nation.
The pastors condemn Trudeau invocation of the Emergencies Act on Monday. Trudeau invoked the act as a “last resort” to clear the protesters out of Ottawa by empowering law enforcement and ordering financial institutions to freeze the bank accounts of protesters and those aiding them.
