Former press secretary and current MSNBC anchor Jen Psaki recently attracted a barrage of corrections for false remarks in which she claimed that “no one” supported late-term abortions.
Psaki’s remarks appeared to respond to the Republican presidential primary debate on Wednesday evening, during which the candidates were interrogated about their stances on the ever-controversial subject of abortion. Several of the Republican candidates criticized the Democrats for their apparent reluctance to impose any restrictions on abortion — even grisly late-term abortions.
“No one supports abortion up until birth,” the red-haired pundit wrote in a post on X.
However, other pundits were quick to correct Psaki’s misconception.
“This is false,” replied conservative commentator Stephen Miller.
John Hasson from Town Hall highlighted that in the previous year Democrats had voted to codify Roe v. Wade into federal legislation. This move was in anticipation of the Supreme Court possibly overturning the longstanding ruling that ensures women’s access to many forms of abortion nationwide. Republicans argue that the proposed legislation, as drafted, would have permitted abortion right up to birth.
Challenged by many, Psaki found it difficult to specify any abortion restrictions she or the former president she served under might endorse.
Here are some other responses:
The potential reversal of Roe prompted significant reflection among Democrats, who had not initiated pro-abortion laws until it seemed too late. During Obama’s tenure, when Democrats had a dominant presence in Congress and a supermajority in the Senate, they primarily focused their efforts on passing the Affordable Health Care Act, rather than addressing abortion rights.
President Biden, over the past year, has made several pro-abortion moves, seemingly to resonate with progressives who appear lukewarm about his potential reelection.
After the potential end of Roe, Biden signed an executive order, which, among other provisions, aimed to provide access to abortion pills via mail — a matter still under legal scrutiny.
The military now offers extended travel and housing benefits for female service members seeking abortions. In response, some Republican senators have stalled the confirmation of commanders needing Senate approval.
Furthermore, members of Biden’s FBI have recently approached pro-life activists, inquiring about potential links to terrorism.
