A former Georgia police officer claims he quit this month rather than risk being fired for possibly objectionable future comments.
Port Wentworth Police Department placed 19-year-old officer Jacob Kersey, who quit earlier this month, on paid administrative leave January 4 for his refusal to delete a Facebook post he made regarding his Christian belief about marriage, Kersey told Fox News Digital.
“God designed marriage,” Kersey began his controversial Facebook post. “Marriage refers to Christ and the Church. That’s why there’s no such thing as homosexual marriage.”
He described how the intense reaction from department leaders convinced him he would be fired for not removing the post. The young officer was brought back to active duty about one week after his suspension, he told Tony Perkins during an interview broadcast of “Washington Watch,” on Rumble.
“They told me I could come back to work but they were creating a new department policy that said if someone, somewhere is offended by anything else I say from here on out, I could be fired for it,” Kersey said.
Kersey added he did not feel his department had his back, noting law enforcement is too dangerous a job to work under those conditions.
He told Perkins he was informed that his referring to scriptures was “like using the N-word or saying ‘F- all those homosexuals.”
Ironically, Kersey noted, the leadership of the Port Wentworth Police Department claims to be Christians.
“I don’t know why they would say an outspoken Christian is the same as a racist,” he added.
A January 13 letter from Major Lee Sherrod, on police department letterhead, acknowledged Kersey is entitled to his own personal beliefs, according to a Daily Signal report. Kersey was, however, “reminded that if any post on any of your social media platforms, or any other statement or action, renders you unable to perform, and to be seen as [unable] to perform, your job in a fair and equitable manner, you could be terminated.”
“I decided to resign,” Kersey explained his reaction to the letter, “because I just didn’t think it wise to go back and play their game.”
