The New York Post reports that pro-Trump, pro-McCarthy Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) “is positioning herself to be former President Donald Trump’s 2024 pick for vice president.”
Steve Bannon, a former adviser for Trump and current host of the War Room podcast, told NBC News: ” This is no shrinking violet, she’s ambitious — she’s not shy about that, nor should she be.”
Bannon added that Greene, 48, sees herself on the “short list for Trump’s VP.”
Bannon said of Greene’s ambitions for the White House, “When MTG looks in the mirror, she sees a potential president smiling back.”
Reportedly, a second source close to the situation told NBC that Greene’s “whole vision is to be Vice President,” and that she believes she could be on Trump’s short list of potential running mates in the 2024 election.
The mere possibility of Greene moving into a VP slot has prompted progressives to light up social media channels.
One Twitter user called Greene a Russian asset.”
Another exclaimed: “That’s as scary as it gets.”
Another wrote: “The thought of her being a heartbeat away [from] the presidency terrifies me as much as the flying monkeys on the Wizard of Oz.”
Greene is no stranger to criticism and taking the political road less traveled. She has consistently criticized President Biden, former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and the House Select Committee’s investigation of the Jan. 6 protest and breach of the Capitol in Washington, D.C.
Greene has also been a longtime and ardent supporter of former President Trump and shrewdly cast her support behind new House Speaker Kevin McCarthy when his bid to become speaker was in doubt.
The New York Post reports that McCarthy rewarded Greene’s support by vowing “to always have her back” and appointing her to two House panels — Homeland Security and Oversight – where “she will play a role in GOP investigations of the Biden administration.”
Bannon commended Greene’s political acumen, saying, “She’s both strategic and disciplined — she made a power move, knowing it would run up hard against her most ardent crew. She was prepared to take the intense heat/hatred short-term for the long-term goal of being a player.”
Trump announced his intent to run for president in 2024 last November. Greene told the New York Times last October that she and Trump had discussed her serving as his running mate.
“I would be honored,” Greene said in October. “I think the last person that the RNC or the national party wants is me as his running mate.”
In September, Trump announced that former Vice President Mike Pence would not be asked to be his running mate should he run for president in 2024.
