On Sunday, Rep. Ashley Hinson (R-IA) was admitted to the hospital in order to obtain treatment for a kidney infection.
Jimmy Peacock, the Republican congresswoman’s chief of staff, released a statement Monday giving her constituents an update on the status of her health.
“Congresswoman Hinson was admitted to UnityPoint St. Luke’s Hospital yesterday evening where she is being treated for a kidney infection. She is looking forward to being back on the road soon. She appreciates all of the prayers and well wishes,” Peacock said.
Later that evening, her spokesman added that Hinson was “feeling better, but still undergoing treatment.” She stayed at the hospital overnight and may stay in the coming days.
“She sincerely appreciates everyone who has reached out, and is grateful for the incredible doctors and nurses at St. Luke’s Hospital who have provided phenomenal care. We will continue to provide updates,” Peacock said in a statement.
Hinson entered Congress in 2021, narrowly beating Democrat Abby Finkenauer. She is currently involved in a competitive race for Iowa’s 2nd Congressional District against Democratic challenger Liz Mathis, an ex-TV news personality like Hinson.
The two candidates had a debate planned for Tuesday on Iowa PBS, but that event has been canceled due to Hinson’s hospitalization.
Hinson is one of 47 House Republicans who voted with Democrats to pass the Respect for Marriage Act, which aims to protect same-sex marriage at a federal level. This legislation is currently being considered in the Senate.
If passed, the RFMA would require that individuals are considered married as long as they are wed in a state where same-sex marriage was legal. The House Judiciary Committee claims that the legislation ensures that same-sex and interracial couples are treated as equally as other married individuals at the federal level.
Hinson currently represents the 1st district, covering the northeastern part of the state, which includes Cedar Rapids. The new 2nd district was redrawn during the decennial redistricting process and is rated R+6, covering roughly the same region.
