On Sunday, a South Carolina state senator was arrested in addition to being ticketed for public intoxication while sitting in his parked car. Now he has spoken out and expressed remorse for his decision.
Officials reported that Republican senator Tom Davis left a party where he drank alcohol, quickly realizing he was not sober enough to be driving, according to WSPA.
Davis pulled over to a nearby lot, turned off his vehicle and sat there for over an hour. During that time, he was approached by a Lexington Police Department officer who arrested and ticketed him for public intoxication.
WJCL reported that Public Information Officer and Sergeant Cameron Mortenson confirmed that Davis was arrested in addition to being ticketed for public intoxication.
The Lexington County Bond Court also confirmed Davis was booked into the Lexington County Detention Center at 3:45 a.m. on Jan. 1 and stayed there until his Bond Court hearing at 10 a.m. He was released on a personal recognizance bond, meaning that, while he was not required to post bail, he will be required to appear in court.
Alexandra Benevento of Strom Law Firm in Columbia, one of the lawyers representing Davis, was asked by WJCL why the information that Davis had been arrested was left out of his statement.
She said that it was “not intentional,” and that lawyers use “cited” and “arrested” interchangeably. Benevento did confirm both she and attorney Pete Strom will be representing Davis at his court hearing in Lexington on March 1.
Davis was reportedly cooperative with law enforcement. Reports say he was not charged with driving under the influence.
Davis has expressed extreme remorse for his lapse in judgment, saying in a statement, “I am ashamed and embarrassed by what happened last night and I want to say I’m sorry to my family and to my constituents.
“I’m not going to deflect or excuse this mistake. Instead, I am going to learn from it and move forward with a greater sense of responsibility,” he said. “I look forward to the opportunity to prove to my family and my constituents that I have learned from this mistake.”
