In the face of rising technological influence and ongoing economic challenges, American restaurateurs are grappling with a fresh source of aggravation.
Toast Inc., a third-party point-of-sale provider, has reportedly been charging an additional 99-cent fee on food orders without the restaurant owners’ approval, stirring ire among the latter.
“People are freaking out,” Tony Naser, owner of four New England pizzarias, told Fox Business. “Business owners are freaking out.”
This new fee, identified as a “technology fee,” emerges directly on customers’ bills, bypassing the restaurant owners entirely.
Many proprietors have expressed concerns, feeling they have lost control over their sales mechanisms to the potent force of Big Tech, embodied here by Toast Inc.
“My contention is that it’s absolutely unethical and illegal,” Matt Wilhelmson, owner of Koehn Bakery, in Butler, Missouri, told Fox. “And if it’s not illegal, it should be.”
When consumers order pizza online, or pay a bill at a restaurant, point-of-sale companies like Toast process the sale for client companies.
Clients pay Toast a monthly fee for the service, according to an American Reveille report. Toast is also paid a percentage fee on every credit card sale.
Toast reportedly began testing the new 99-cent fee on restaurant customers around the country after the company partnered with Google, in February.
Shippers reportedly complained about getting roped into contracts where Toast can pretty much charge whatever they want and there’s nothing that they can do about it.
Toast, in response to the mounting controversy, confirmed this fee was introduced as part of a pilot program after it entered a partnership with Google earlier this year.
The company further defended its decision, claiming the fee would be used to drive innovation and development within the firm.
“Toast is always working to improve and innovate within the restaurant industry and sometimes that means testing new things,” said a Toast spokesperson. “We have been testing a small technology fee with a number of restaurants and customers. All funds from the technology fee go towards improving our platform and creating a better experience for our users.”
However, despite Toast’s assurances, many in the restaurant industry remain discontented, perceiving this as another instance of corporate overreach into small businesses’ operations and their customers’ pockets.
