Only one day after distancing himself from what he perceived as conservative media’s opportunistic attempts to ride his fame and working class credibility, “Rich Man North of Richmond” singer Oliver Anthony has spoken out in what he said would be his “last post about politics” to clarify that he is not a Democrat or a supporter of President Biden.
“Corporate news (big surprise) is now trying to twist me into being a Biden supporter,” Anthony wrote with a laughing emoji.
Anthony claimed that Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis was implying that removing Biden “would automatically solve all the problems,” an insinuation which the folk singer vehemently disputed.
“Biden is a big part of the issue, bit it runs much deeper,” Anthony said. “‘Rich Men North of Richmond’ is about corporate owned DC politicians on both sides. Though Biden’s most certainly a problem, the lyrics aren’t exclusively knocking Biden, it’s bigger and broader than that. It’s knocking the system collectively. Including the corporate owned conservative polticans [sic] that were on stage that night.”
Anthony hails from Farmville, Virginia, a region within the state’s 5th Congressional District. Since 2020, Rep. Bob Good (R-VA) has represented this district. Anthony’s political inclinations have been a topic of speculation. He expressed his frustration, stating it was “aggravating seeing people on conservative news try to identify with me like I’m one of them.”
Reports indicate that on the debate day, Anthony’s song was raking in $40,000 daily. Three of his tracks secured the top three positions on iTunes. The artist, currently touring, boasts over 4.5 million monthly Spotify listeners, a significant leap from the 40,000 he had prior to his latest song release.
Anthony’s recent remarks follow hot on the heels of a recently released YouTube video, in which the singer distanced himself from the Republican Party and conservative media.
“I’ve had a lot of people reach out to me and I tried to be polite to everybody, and I’ve talked to hundreds of people the last two weeks, and it seems like certain people want to just ride the attention of the song to maybe make their own selves relevant, and that’s aggravating as hell,” Anthony said.
