In a story that doesn’t seem to be going away anytime soon, five-time Golden Globe Award Night host Ricky Gervais has chimed in on the Chris Rock – Will Smith controversy.
For our Amish friends and the few others on the planet who are not aware, on Sunday night, as segment host Chris Rock was preparing to introduce the next Academy award he shared an insensitive joke at Jada Pinkett Smith’s expense. Will Smith, sitting with his wife in the front row, took offense, walked up to the stage, and slapped Rock in the face.
Thousands on multiple social media channels have debated, dissected, and discussed the incident at length. However, entertainment field talk show host and consultant Ross Owen took the discussion in a new direction when he asked how the night would have been different if Ricky Gervais had been hosted the show.
It did not take long for Gervais to succumb to the irresistible challenge to chime in. The Daily Mail captured his response.
The Mirror noted that Gervais, “famous for ‘roasting’ celebrities as the host of the Golden Globes, said he would not have commented on Jade Pinkett Smith’s hair—he would have made jokes about Jada’s boyfriend instead.
Gervais made the comment while performing in London, saying:
“I trended when that happened, and I was not even there. People were going, ‘What would have happened if Ricky Gervais had been doing it [hosting the Oscars]?'”
According to the New York Post, it was then that Gravis “dropped his bombshell” and commented on the Smith’s so-called “open relationship.”
The comedian referred to Jada Smith’s, 50, high-profile relationship with singer August Alsina, 29.
Last September, Will Smith announced that he and his wife were in an open relationship.
Fans seem unsure how to respond. Some applaud Will for slapping Chris. Some hold that it was a harmless joke. Some had to retreat to their safe spaces and some wondered why Will would strike a man making a joke about his wife but not care that a man was intimate with his wife.
Conservative Commentator CJ Pearson tweeted: “Will Smith’s marriage is open to EVERYTHING except jokes.”

“I’d start with ‘Hello. I hope this show helps cheer up the ordinary people watching at home,'” the comedian sniped. “‘If you’re unemployed for example, take some comfort in the fact that even if you had a job, your salary probably wouldn’t be as much as the goody bag all the actors have just been given.'”
