The frontman for a Canadian punk band is hospitalized with a serious respiratory infection, according to a social media post from his wife.
Deryck Whibley, lead vocalist for Canadian pop-punk band Sum 41, is being treated for pneumonia at a hospital, his wife Ariana, announced Friday on Instagram.
“Deryck and I were suppose to be in Chicago right now, celebrating our eight year wedding anniversary but the universe had a different plan for us,” Ariana Whibley posted to her Instagram.
“We spent the entire night in the ER and will now be spending the next few days here in the hospital as he fights through pneumonia.”
Despite Whibley’s relatively young age of 43, the severity of his condition has raised alarms. His wife expressed concern about the gravity of his situation.
“The scariest part is that there is a lot of strain on his heart and they are telling us that there is a possibility of heart failure,” the rocker’s wife explained.
Whibley’s health has been a topic of concern in the past. He has experienced multiple back injuries, leading him to miss numerous performances, according to a report from the Los Angeles Times.
In 2010, Whibley was hospitalized after being assaulted by three individuals at a bar in Japan. the report noted.
The punk band frontman made headlines in 2014 when he was admitted for severe liver and kidney damage attributed to alcoholism, according to the LA Times report.
Whibley’s wife expressed distress over seeing her husband in such a state again.
“This is obviously not our first time in a situation like this but it brings back a lot of really difficult memories seeing him back in a hospital bed connected to wires and IVs,” she said.
“I know how strong he is because I have witnessed what he has been able to overcome but that doesn’t make it any easier to see. I’ll do my best to keep everyone updated but if you could keep him in your heart over the next few days, we could really use it
