Former New York City mayor and Trump adviser Rudy Giuliani turned himself into Georgia law officials following being charged with conspiring to overturn 2020 election results.
Giuliani is one of 15 defendants said to belong to a conspiracy ring, working with former President Donald Trump to disrupt the election process.
Giuliani turned himself in without incident, shaking the hand of an officer as he entered the county building. He reiterated to the press as he entered the building: I turned over the entire videotape and script of my speech to the FBI within days of January 6th.”
Trump will reportedly plead not guilty and surrender to authorities on Thursday.
The New York Post reported that Scott Hall was the first of those charged by Atlanta District Attorney Fani Willis to turn himself in. John Eastman also surrendered to authorities on Tuesday.
Coffee County GOP Chair Cathy Latham, former Trump lawyer Kenneth Chesebro, former Georgia State Sen. David Shafer, and Georgia lawyer Ray Smith have surrendered to authorities as well.
Willis gave all the defendants until noon Friday to surrender.
Forbes reported that Giuliani was charged with 13 counts in the case and was released on a $150,000 bond.
Trump has alleged political bias in the case — citing many peculiarities in how Willis has led in prosecuting the case, including ordering the release of mugshots to ABC News and requesting a March 4 trial date — one day before “Super Tuesday,” an important day in the 2024 election cycle.
Giuliani also claims the case is politically motivated and has urged the prosecution to review his previous testimony on the matter. “Have they listened to the tape? I don’t incite. I exhort them to fight legally, properly, and through the system,” the former mayor claimed.
“It’s like getting Al Capone for having an unlisted phone,” Giuliani added. “I mean, gee, they can’t get him for being a leader of organized crime so they get him for an unlisted phone.”
Trump’s stellar poll numbers appear to indicate the public is growing tired and skeptical of prosecutorial actions against Trump and January 6 protesters.
In a statement following his booking, Giuliani said:
I’m the same Rudy Giuliani that took down the mafia that made New York City the safest city in America.
Enemies of our republic were destroying rights, sacred rights. They’re destroying my right to counsel, my right to be a lawyer. They’re destroying his right to counsel.
It’s not accidental that they’ve indicted all as lawyers. Never heard of that before in America.” “Whether you dislike or you like Donald Trump, let me give you a warning: it’s gonna come for you when the political winds shift, as they always do, let us pray that Republicans are more honest, more trustworthy, and more American than these people in charge of this government.
Donald Trump told you this. They weren’t just coming for him or me.
