Republicans Stay Mad as Sarah Huckabee Sanders Doubles Down After Her Latest Controversial Ad With White Man Ruffles Feathers

“You Win.” Those two words close out the latest video from Arkansas Gov. Sarah Huckabee Sanders, and they have set off an argument that now stretches from social media into conservative media.

The video opens on a young man who appears to be in his twenties. He is white, and he sits in a dark room with a game in front of him and junk food within reach.

Sanders narrates over the scene, laying out her welfare-to-work program.

The clip ends with a turn. The man leaves to go to work, and the caption fills the screen.

Online critics went after the ad almost immediately. The Post Millennial reported that the governor drew fire for casting a white man as the face of welfare fraud in Arkansas.

Sanders answered the criticism herself.

“Some critics online don’t like my welfare work requirement ad. Next thing you know they’ll say I should have used cookies instead of cheese balls. If you are able-bodied you should not collect welfare simply because you choose not to work. Period,” she said.

She then directed her audience to watch the ad.

Jack Posobiec of Human Events Daily took a different view. “Governor, I say this with all due respect, fire your comms team immediately,” he said.

His comment carries weight because of where the ad sits politically. Work requirements for welfare recipients are a policy conservatives typically support, and the video pushes exactly that policy.

Sanders did not announce any edits to the spot. Her statement focused on able-bodied adults and the expectation that they hold jobs.

Numbers cited in coverage of the fight add detail about who receives aid in Arkansas. Fewer than 8 percent of residents are on welfare, according to those figures.

The same figures show that elderly residents make up most of the non-working people who receive government benefits in the state.

Black Arkansans draw welfare at a rate above their share of the population, the statistics show. At least 22 percent of Black households in the state use the benefits.

Young men, the group featured in the ad, show low unemployment in Arkansas, according to the same reporting. They also register the highest support for Republicans, the party Sanders leads in the state.

The reporting adds that these men form a strong part of the state’s tax base, and that many of them already work.

The dispute also touches a longer-running conversation on the right.

Since the 2020 election, an organized effort has aimed to reengage young men who say opportunities in the United States have closed to them.

Those men point to government programs, agencies and institutions that have pursued diversity.

In their telling, that push moved white men, and men in general, to the back of the line for education, jobs and training.

That backdrop has colored part of the reaction on the right to the governor’s video.

For now, the ad remains online and the argument continues.

Critics, allies and commentators from conservative media have all weighed in, and Sanders has held to her message that able-bodied adults should work.

Welfare-to-work requirements are great, BTW. But this ad ain’t it.

Rather than showing a caricature of a deadbeat (of *any* race and gender), they should have released an affirming, uplifting ad. Show video footage of smiling people walking into a job site in the morning…
