Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputies responded to former Vice President Kamala Harris’ Malibu mansion Friday night after security personnel reported a suspicious person on the property.
The individual illegally entered the grounds but was intercepted by Harris’ private security team before reaching the residence, according to The Associated Press.
Deputies were dispatched to the residence around 10:30 p.m. after receiving a call from the security detail.
Harris and her husband, Doug Emhoff, were away from the home when the incident occurred, spokesman Eduardo Negrón confirmed.
“Last night, security personnel stopped an individual who illegally entered Vice President Harris and Second Gentleman Emhoff’s property before the individual reached the home,” Negrón said.
The couple was grateful to the security officers and law enforcement personnel who responded quickly, he added.
Deputies contacted the unidentified person outside the property and instructed the individual to leave.
The person complied voluntarily, and the encounter ended without further incident. Authorities did not make an arrest.
The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department filed a trespassing report following the encounter.
Deputies from the local station will also increase patrols around the residence as a precaution, according to CBS News.
Authorities have not publicly identified the trespasser or disclosed a possible motive.
It also remains unclear how the individual entered the outer grounds of the property or why the person was allowed to leave without being cited.
FOX 11 Los Angeles reported that the alleged trespasser was a woman, though other initial reports did not identify the person’s gender.
Harris and Emhoff purchased the Malibu property for approximately $8.1 million in May.
The security incident follows a previous dispute over the former vice president’s federal protection.
Former vice presidents typically receive Secret Service protection for six months after leaving office, while former presidents receive protection for life.
Former President Joe Biden extended Harris’ protection beyond the usual six-month period before leaving the White House.
President Donald Trump revoked that extension in August 2025. The additional protection would otherwise have continued into summer 2026.
Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass criticized the decision at the time, arguing that removing the extension placed Harris at risk, per the New York Post.
Harris has continued using private security since her extended federal protection ended.
The Malibu response comes as law enforcement agencies face heightened attention surrounding threats and unauthorized approaches involving political figures and their families.
The Secret Service recently opened an investigation after Iranian state television aired material naming Barron Trump as an assassination target, as RTM reported.
New FBI records have also provided additional details about security failures surrounding the attempted assassination of Trump in Butler, Pennsylvania, according to a separate report.
No weapon was reported during the incident at Harris’ residence, and officials have not alleged that the individual threatened Harris, Emhoff or members of the security team.
The encounter remained under investigation after deputies documented the alleged trespassing.
Authorities said increased patrols would continue near the Malibu property following the security breach.
