Supreme Court Interrupts Its Break for Landmark Trump Ballot Case

The traditional January break for U.S. Supreme Court justices was interrupted to hear what the Washington Examiner described as a “Landmark Trump ballot case.”

The unprecedented dispute concerning a former U.S. president and current presidential candidate is just one of several issues that have been escalated to the high court.

Each matter the court will hear is considered urgent. This case will determine if states can bar Donald Trump’s name from appearing on the 2024 election ballot.

Colorado’s State Supreme Court, and Maine’s attorney’s general, ruled that the former president was ineligible due to violating the 14th Amendment’s sedition clause.

Colorado’s December 19 ruling was challenged by the state GOP office, thus putting the matter before the U.S. Supreme Court. On Jan. 5, the U.S. Supreme Court agreed to take up the case.

In support of the former president, approximately 25 groups have filed Amicus Briefs with the Court.

The timely matter of several cases interrupts the justice’s typical mid-late January to mid-February break.

Oral arguments are scheduled for Thursday, Feb. 8. Analysts note the Thursday schedule is unusual as oral arguments are generally held Monday–Wednesday. The unusual date indicates special accommodation by the Court.

On Feb. 8, the high court may also release one or more opinions on Trump-related cases they have reviewed in recent weeks — including Trump’s petition to be granted presidential immunity and thus have Jan. 6 related charges dismissed.

Many have noted that the 2024 election cycle will be profoundly impacted however the high court rules.
