In a sad but not surprising reveal, a new letter shows that Princess Diana was very unhappy in her marriage to Charles, who became King Charles III after the passing of Queen Elizabeth II.
The so-called “secret letters” detail the Princess of Wales’ unhappiness, her feelings regarding the “ugly” divorce and how emotionally devastating her relationship with Charles was.
According to the Mirror, 32 letters from Diana to friends Susie and Tarek Kassem detail the emotional state of Diana in her last years of life. Princess Diana died in an auto accident while pursued by paparazzi in 1997.
The New York Post noted the letters are “now up for auction.” The proceeds will be “given to various charities that Diana … supported during her lifetime.”
The letters will be auctioned on Feb. 16 by the famed Cornwall-based Lay’s Auctioneers. Auctioneers expect bids to exceed $111,000.
One letter in the collection, dated Apr. 28, 1996, notes Diana’s painful relationship with Charles:
“I am having a very difficult time, and pressure is serious and coming from all sides,” Diana wrote. “It’s too difficult sometimes to keep one’s head up and today I am on my knees and just longing for this divorce to go through as the possible cost is tremendous.”
In Feb. 1996, Diana announced she had agreed to then-Prince Charles’ divorce request. A court finalized the divorce in Aug. 1996. Diana died a year later on Aug. 31, 1997.
