San Diego Padres infielder Manny Machado Wednesday talked baseball during an Arizona spring training interview while his t-shirt spoke politics.
The gold-glove winner was shown in a photo posted by independent Sand Diego TV station KUSI News to their Twitter account. He is holding a microphone in his right hand but the focus is on his t-shirt with the inscription, “Let’s Go, Brandon.”
“Padres superstar Manny Machado repping a “Let’s Go Brandon” shirt at Spring Training,” KUSI editors wrote in the caption above the photo.
The saying has been enthusiastically embraced by a considerable number of people in the United States, mainly Conservatives. The phrase is a family-friendly way to express displeasure with U.S. President Joe Biden.
NBC reporter Kelli Stavast started the trend while interviewing NASCAR driver Brandon Brown October 2, 2021 at Alabama’s Talladega Superspeedway after he won his first NASCAR Xfinity Series race. The race was called before all laps were completed, reportedly due to darkness. As she was interviewing Brown, nearby fans began loudly chanting, “F#*! Joe Biden”, which she told viewers was a chant of “Let’s Go, Brandon.”
Since then, the chant has been used at many southern college football contents by crowd members; a Christmas song with the phrase went viral and many memes continue to entertain (and anger) large numbers of social media users. The phrase has become so widely recognized as a presidential political protest point that people wearing clothing with the slogan have been banned from businesses. Some people have been told to cover, or replace, clothing with the slogan or they would be kicked off airline flights.
Author Nick Adams responded to the tweet, saying, “Manny Machado is the only man who can save Major League Baseball.”
Herschel Walker’s son, Christian commented on the Machado tweet by noting his father was kicked off the National Sports and Fitness Council by Biden. He claimed his father, one of the most fit and accomplished athletes on the planet, is allegedly being removed from the council because he is a Republican.
