Hillary Clinton appears to be using the FBI raid on former President Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate to fundraise for her campaign.
“Every ‘But her emails’ hat or shirt sold helps @onwardtogether partners defend democracy, build a progressive bench, and fight for our values,” Clinton tweeted on Tuesday. “Just saying!”
The shirts are in reference to Clinton’s use of a personal email server to house classified information during her time as Secretary of State, a point which became a major issue of contention during her 2016 presidential bid against Trump. The FBI completed its investigation in July of 2016, and then-director James Comey called Clinton’s handling of extremely sensitive information “extremely careless,” but didn’t recommend criminal charges.
Clinton began selling “But her emails” hats back in February, offered “just in time for Valentine’s Day and the news that Trump was flushing documents down White House toilets.”
In her Tuesday tweet, Clinton posted a photoshopped image of herself wearing the $32 hat and a link to the online shop on Onward Together, her political action organization founded in 2017.
FBI agents executed a search warrant of Trump’s Mar-a-Lago property on Monday. It was reported that they were seeking classified documents he allegedly took from the White House when he left office in 2021. They were initially believed to be tied to 15 boxes that Trump took when he left the White House, but those boxes were recovered back in January.
It is currently unknown exactly what the FBI was seeking, although the warrant was conducted in connection with the National Archives that is responsible for recovering classified documents, according to a senior government official.
Trump’s camp and Republicans accused the FBI of acting on behalf of Democrats to crush their political enemies after recent polling showed Trump as a strong contender to run for a second term as commander in chief again in 2024.
One top lawyer for Clinton’s presidential campaign, Marc Elias, suggested that the FBI raid could bar Trump from seeking public office ever again.
Clinton, meanwhile, is speculated as being a possible contender for the 2024 presidential election, despite many being opposed to the possibility of her running for office yet again, though she herself has denied the possibility.
“No, out of the question,” she said when asked about the possibility. “First of all, I expect Biden to run. He certainly intends to run. It would be very disruptive to challenge that.”
However, the plug for her merch would seem to suggest otherwise and could serve as fuel for those claims.
