On Wednesday, Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-IA) informed voters that he underwent a major surgery, adding that he believes he will make a full recovery.
A statement from Grassley’s office said that the senator suffered an injury on Tuesday and underwent surgery on his hip.
“Senator Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) today hurt his hip and will have surgery this week. He is otherwise in good spirits and is expected to make a full recovery,” said the Jan. 10 statement.
The next day, Grassley tweeted, “My hip surgery today to repair a fracture was very successful. On my way to a full recovery.”
The 89-year-old Grassley was reelected to an eighth term in the U.S. Senate during November’s midterm elections, making him the longest-serving member of the Senate when he was sworn in Jan. 3.
The Des Moines Register reported that, on Monday morning, Grassley joined his grandson, Pat Grassley, who serves as speaker of the House in the Iowa legislation at the Iowa Capitol where members of the state Legislature marked the start of the 2023 session.
His colleagues were quick to issue words of encouragement to the senator, who is known for his habit of running early in the morning.
“Join me in praying for a speedy recovery for @ChuckGrassley,” Sen. Joni Ernst (R-IA) tweeted Tuesday night. “I know he’ll be back on his 4am running routine in no time!”
Grassley is one of two GOP senators who have been involved in investigating the Biden family for alleged corruption over the course of several years, and have stepped up efforts more recently. In October 2020, when Facebook and Twitter suppressed revelations about the laptop of Hunter Biden, Grassley, along with Sen. Ron Johnson (R-WI) sought further answers.
Grassley and Johnson later sent a letter to Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg noting that in October 2020, “when the New York Post published articles based on evidence from Hunter Biden’s laptop, many news and social media organizations inappropriately rushed to censor and discredit the initial reporting and falsely labeled it as ‘disinformation.’”
Since that time, many of the aforementioned media outlets have admitted that the information gleaned from the laptop was not Russian disinformation, but was real.
“You recently appeared to indicate that the reason why Facebook made the unwise decision to censor articles about Hunter Biden’s laptop was based on an alert from the Federal Bureau of Investigation,” the senators wrote.
“Whistleblowers have also alleged to Senator Johnson that local FBI leadership instructed its employees not to look at the Hunter Biden laptop immediately after the FBI had obtained it,” the senators noted, further adding that Americans “deserve to know whether the FBI used Facebook as part of their alleged plan to discredit information about Hunter Biden.”
“Congress and the American people require clarity with respect to the extent the FBI communicated with Facebook during the 2020 election about Hunter Biden-related information,” they added.
New House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan (R-OH) also recently said he believes there has been a seismic shift regarding the ongoing federal investigation of President Joe Biden’s son Hunter Biden.
Jordan suggested “something is up” with the probe, due to new interest in the story from many media outlets who initially dismissed reports of the materials and emails coming out of the laptop after Hunter Biden reportedly abandoned it at a computer repair store in Delaware in 2019.
“It sure looks like Joe Biden was involved,” Jordan added. “So, my, how this story has changed. And now, we find out these text messages and emails that link the entire family, not just Hunter and Joe and — but also uncle, the — Joe’s brother, James Biden, is involved in this as well.”
Additionally, Rep. James Comer (R-KY), the new chairman of the House Oversight and Reform Committee, told the Washington Post that Republicans plan to launch investigations very soon.
“Do you plan on investigating Washington’s influence industry more broadly, or will the investigation be focused solely on Hunter Biden’s business deals?” asked the Post.
Comer responded, “Right now we’re focusing on Joe Biden. We’ll be looking into Hunter and Jim Biden — people forget about Jim, he’s just as bad as Hunter — with respect to influence-peddling. Sometimes these investigations uncover other areas that need to be looked into, so we’ll see what happens. I’m hoping that at the end of this investigation, there’s a legislative fix as to define what exactly is influence-peddling and what should be legal, what should not be legal.”
