First Lady Melania Trump’s infamous leaked phone call about Christmas decorations is back in the spotlight, but friends of the first lady say the viral moment has been badly misrepresented for years.
The recording, secretly taped in the summer of 2018 and later released by former adviser Stephanie Winston Wolkoff, captured Melania venting about relentless criticism while juggling White House holiday duties.
“I’m working my a** off on the Christmas stuff,” Melania said at the time. “Who gives a f*ck about the Christmas stuff and decorations?”
The clip went viral instantly and was weaponized by critics who painted her as cold, detached, or hostile toward the holiday season.
Now, those close to Melania say the outburst came on a particularly bad day and reflected frustration, not hatred for Christmas.
Friends told the Daily Mail that Melania was under nonstop attack from the media, activists, and Democrats, who accused her of focusing on decorations while ignoring the border crisis.
She addressed that criticism directly in the call, saying she was being hammered for Christmas planning instead of migrant family separations at the southern border. “Give me a f***ing break,” she said.
According to those close to her, the comment was less about Christmas and more about being used as a political punching bag.
Melania has long been mocked for her accent, her reserved demeanor, and her holiday decorating choices. In 2017, critics ridiculed her stark white trees. In 2018, they erupted over her blood red cranberry trees lining the East Colonnade.
She defended those decorations at the time, saying everyone has different tastes and adding that she thought they looked fantastic.
Former White House press secretary and Melania’s chief of staff Stephanie Grisham pushed back on the idea that Melania dislikes the holidays.
“She loves the holiday and she loves the events that have to do with children,” Grisham said. She added that Melania puts significant time and attention into the decorations and children’s events.
A close family friend echoed that sentiment, saying Melania never had to take on the role but did so anyway.
“She doesn’t have to stand for hours in four-inch heels smiling and greeting people,” the friend said. “But she does it and with no complaint.”
The friend also said the leaked call revealed something the media rarely allows Melania to show.
“It showed her being human,” the friend said. “She had a bad day.”
Others went further, calling the moment relatable rather than scandalous.
“She has a potty mouth and takes no prisoners,” the friend said. “People respect that. It shows she doesn’t lie down and take any crap.”
Despite the backlash, Melania has continued embracing her holiday responsibilities. This year’s White House Christmas theme is “Home Is Where The Heart Is,” featuring dozens of wreaths, more than 50 Christmas trees, thousands of feet of garland and ribbon, and intricate design elements across the state rooms.
Ironically, she no longer has to decorate the East Colonnade, which was demolished as part of President Trump’s plan to build a new White House ballroom, as the Daily Mail reported.
White House historians note that every First Lady faces intense scrutiny over Christmas decor, often regardless of political party or effort.
In Melania’s case, friends say the leaked call should be seen less as a scandal and more as a reminder that even First Ladies reach a breaking point.
