JD Vance Puts Trump in a Vulnerable Position After RNC Fundraising Text Urges Supporters Not to Donate if Doing so Would Make it Harder for Them to Buy Groceries

Vice President J.D. Vance drew attention this week after a Republican National Committee fundraising text bearing his name urged supporters not to contribute if doing so would interfere with their ability to afford groceries.

The unusual appeal was shared Tuesday by Washington Post White House reporter Natalie Allison and quickly gained traction online.

“If you can’t give right now, don’t, Natalie. Groceries cost what they cost. But can you answer this for me?” the message read before directing the recipient to an RNC fundraising link.

The text was signed by Vance and continued with an unusually candid acknowledgment of the Republican Party’s financial needs.

“Now the part I owe you honesty about,” the message stated. “The Republican National Committee needs money. That’s true of every party committee, and anyone who tells you otherwise is doing the exact thing I just apologized for. So I’m not going to dress it up.”

The fundraising pitch then reiterated that supporters experiencing financial difficulties should prioritize their own expenses rather than political donations.

“If you can’t give right now, don’t. Groceries cost what they cost. I’m not going to make you feel guilty over a number,” the message said.

“But if you want to back it up, I’d be honored to earn it — and you ought to be able to see exactly where it goes.”

The appeal reportedly directed recipients to an itemized “receipt” explaining how their contribution would be used.

While the language appeared designed to distinguish the RNC’s solicitation from more aggressive political fundraising appeals, Democrats quickly highlighted Vance’s reference to grocery costs as the Trump administration continues confronting criticism over affordability, per the Daily Mail.

The Democratic National Committee claimed Americans had spent $310 more on groceries during President Donald Trump and Vance’s first year in office than they did in 2024.

DNC Rapid Response Director Kendall Witmer accused the administration of failing to adequately address household costs.

“The Trump-Vance administration has sent grocery prices skyrocketing, making life unaffordable for everyday Americans, and Vance is turning a blind eye to the hardship of American families,” Witmer said.

The latest federal statistics cited in the report, however, showed a more complicated picture.

Bureau of Labor Statistics figures indicated that prices for food purchased for consumption at home were 2.7 percent higher in July 2026 than they were one year earlier.

At the same time, grocery prices declined 0.1 percent between June and July.

Individual food categories have also moved differently, with egg prices recently falling while beef prices have increased considerably.

The fundraising message also drew attention because of the RNC’s current financial position compared with Democrats.

According to Federal Election Commission filings available through July 31, the RNC reported approximately $130.4 million in cash on hand.

The DNC, meanwhile, reported $16.33 million in cash on hand in its latest filing covering activity through June 30.

Despite that advantage, the Vance-branded message openly acknowledged that the Republican committee continues seeking additional money while attempting to reassure financially strained supporters that donations should not come before necessities.
