Grief overtook a familiar face of Los Angeles television Tuesday night, live in front of viewers, as the scale of a helicopter disaster in Chatsworth became impossible to hide.
Robert Kovacik, who has spent more than two decades reporting for NBC4, sat inside a police vehicle only steps from smoldering wreckage, dabbing tears from his eyes as cameras rolled nearby.
That wreckage belonged to NewsChopper4, the very aircraft Kovacik’s own colleagues had been flying just hours earlier before it went down over Chatsworth.
Two people aboard the helicopter did not survive.
Eliana Moreno, a 38-year-old aerial journalist, and George Marciniw, the pilot at the controls, both died when the chopper crashed while flying over the aftermath of an unrelated deadly wreck.
That earlier wreck, a collision between a Metro bus and an SUV, had already claimed a life of its own: 29-year-old Edy Gutierrez Mejia died on the ground before the helicopter ever went down.
For Kovacik, the losses were personal.
He had spent years working alongside both Moreno and Marciniw, and he happened to be reporting from the ground when the full weight of what had happened began to register on camera.
Cameras caught him rattled and unsteady well before any official had confirmed whose aircraft had crashed, surrounded by a growing crowd of emergency responders and fellow journalists converging on the scene.
Minutes later, he went live anyway, pushing through a broadcast that tested his composure in real time.
“You think about it ladies, as we deal with this day of dueling tragedies here in Chatsworth, we were just getting ready to come on air for the NBC 4 news at 7:00 tonight and we were there,” Kovacik said.
He then spoke directly to two anchors back in the studio.
“Colleen and Carolyn, we are surrounded by this community…members of the media and colleagues from across Southern California, as well as the LAFD and the LAPD and members of the city all coming together tonight.”
His voice cracked as he wrapped the segment. “In Chatsworth, I’m Robert Kovacik,” he said, his eyes glassy, before telling the anchors, “Let’s go back to you.”
Even before that broadcast, Kovacik’s unease had already been visible on air, as uncertainty about the crash spread through the reporters gathered nearby.
“I just saw a colleague of mine from ABC in tears and concern,” he said at the time. “We don’t know where the chopper is from. We don’t know if it even is a chopper. We don’t know if it is a news chopper.”
As the scene unfolded, Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass arrived and was seen wrapping Kovacik in an embrace, one of several moments of visible grief among officials and press gathered at the site.
Moreno’s voice had long been familiar to audiences of both NBC4 and its Spanish-language sister station, Telemundo 52, where her aerial reports covered everything from wildfires to high-speed police chases.
Marciniw, for his part, brought decades of flight experience to the cockpit, having also worked as a flight instructor apart from his news-helicopter duties.
Together, the pair had logged hundreds of hours flying as partners, according to information released by NBC following the crash.
The helicopter had been sent to document the fallout from the bus-and-SUV collision when it abruptly went down in a parking lot near a storage business, just before 7 p.m.
Investigators have not yet identified what caused the crash, and the exact circumstances remain unresolved.
The National Transportation Safety Board has since taken possession of video and audio recorded during the helicopter’s final moments, examining the footage for clues about what sent the aircraft down.
NBC4 and Telemundo 52 issued a joint statement afterward mourning their fallen colleagues.
“We are deeply saddened to share that a helicopter providing aerial news coverage for NBC4 and Telemundo 52 was involved in a fatal accident in Los Angeles on Tuesday evening,” the statement read. “We extend our heartfelt condolences to the families, friends, and colleagues of those who lost their lives.”
By the time the wreckage had settled, Chatsworth had absorbed two separate fatal incidents within the span of a single evening, bringing the combined death toll to five.
What began as routine coverage of one tragedy ended instead as a tragedy of its own, one that left a veteran anchor grieving on live television in front of the very audience he had spent years serving.
